M-State football heads into fall with Fry at the helm

As the relaxing days of summer march towards the start of August pre-season camps in college football, one gridiron program in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference will take the field with a new head coach for the first time since 2007.  

Korey Fry will be the lead man on the Minnesota State Community & Technical College Spartan sideline this fall, taking over for long-time coach Steve King, who remains at M-State as the director of athletics and softball coach.  Coach Fry was able to take some time out of his busy summer to connect with MCAC Sports recently, as he and his staff prepare for the upcoming season.

MCAC Sports: Please tell us a bit about your sports background:  KF- "I have been competing in sports since the age of 5.  I was an All – State football player in High School, earned All- Region recognition as an MCAC student-athlete and played in the 1st and only NJCAA vs California Community College Athletic Association All –Star Game.  I also played two seasons of Arena Football with the Detroit Thunder." 

MCAC Sports: Did you play or coach sports other than football growing up or as an adult?: KF -  "I ran track and played basketball. I also coached AAU basketball as an assistant for Detroit Roadrunners." 

 

MCAC Sports: What led you to Minnesota State-Fergus Falls?    KF -"I played for the Spartans for the '06 and '07 seasons. I felt like this was home to me and was happy to come back and coach."  

 

MCAC Sports: What are your goals for the program?  KF- "My goals for the program include helping to develop the Spartan football brand, as well as to provide a strong leadership base for every student athlete that comes through our program."

 

MCAC Sports:  Who have been some important influences in your coaching career?: KF- "My high School Head Coach Keith Stephens, and Steve King (former M-State head coach and current athletic director)."

 

MCAC Sports: What does 2017-18 hold for your team? KF- "I believe this will be a season of learning and developing from a personal standpoint, but as a team we believe we have a strong core group that will compete every Saturday."

 

MCAC Sports: Any predictions about how the season will go?- KF- "Predictions, That Spartans football will make things interesting this season."

 

MCAC Sports:  What do you most enjoy about coaching football?  KF-" Definitely enjoy the bond we share with the coaches and players." 

 

MCAC Sports: Do you have a particular team or memory that stands out in your time as a coach? KF- "I believe this 2017 team will be in my memory for the rest of my life, being it's my 1st team as the Head Coach." 

 

MCAC Sports: Any superstitions or unique facts about yourself that you would like to tell us about?   KF- "Every night before a game I sit at the game field and say a prayer for our team and opponents."

The M-State football season will kickoff on September 2nd when they travel to Mesabi Range College for a 3pm start.  The Spartan vs. Norsemen clash will feature two head coaches new in their roles with their programs, as Coach Fry is joined by Mesabi Range head coach Tom Inforzato, who will be on the running the show from the MRC sideline. This fall, Inforzato takes over for Dan Lind, the veteran Mesabi Range football coach who retired at the conclusion of the 2016 campaign.
