Pioneer Basketball Team Earns Honor

Pioneer Basketball Team Earns Honor

Rochester, MN-

The Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team has claimed the first MCAC / U.S. Marine Corps Team-of-the-Week honor of 2019 for their role in helping head coach Shannon Nelson earn her 200th win with the Pioneer program.

The "MCAC / U.S. Marine Corps Team-of-the-Week" honor is an awards initiative sponsored by the United States Marine Corps to be conducted over the 2018-19 academic year in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, recognizing service to community, outstanding performances and strong leadership in MCAC athletic programs.

Northland dealt Mesabi Range College a 75-43 setback in late December to close out 2018, and in doing so,  provided their mentor with her milestone win.  Nelson and Northland will look to pick up win #201 on January 4 or 5 when they take on two NJCAA Division II programs in Gogebic Community College and Dakota College-Bottineau during the NCTC Classic held in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.  The Pioneers are currently 8-2 on the year and ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division III poll.

Under Nelson, several former players have moved on to four-year programs at the NCAA and NAIA level, including ShaRon Miller, a Blaine, Minnesota product and former Northland All-America selection, currently competing at NCAA Division I Grand Canyon University.  Miller is averaging 10.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds a contest for GCU. Nelson and Miller led the Pioneers to two NJCAA National Tournament appearances in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.  Miller noted the impact that Coach Nelson had in her development and opportunity to pursue NCAA Division I basketball in this interview from last season.
