Amber Smith, Itasca CC
Itasca Community College has announced that former Viking standout Amber Smith has been tabbed to become the next head coach of the ICC women's basketball program. After completing her NJCAA eligibility at Itasca, Smith went on to attend and play basketball for the College of St. Scholastica, graduating with a BA in Educational Studies.
In addition to coaching at ICC this season, Smith will work at Deer River Elementary School in Deer River, Minnesota. Originally from Bemidji High School - where she also ran track - Smith was two-year starter for the Vikings and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in her sophomore MCAC campaign. At at UMAC-member CSS, she earned the Coaches Blue/Gold Award as a junior in the Saints program. In her senior season, Smith appeared in 22 contests, including 14 of 16 Conference games.
Smith takes over for John Bauer, who coached the Itasca team for 18 seasons. Bauer's 2006 ICC team won the Minnesota Community College State Championship. Read more on Bauer at this link.
