Vermilion Student-Athlete Claims First Athlete-of-the-Week Honor

The first Athlete-of-the-Week from the Clay Target ranks of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference is a two-sport athlete who is excelling in Ely, Minnesota. 

Vermilion Community College's Ellie Hintze captures the first MCAC Clay Target Athlete-of-the-Week honor for her terrific recent performance for VCC head coach Wade KlingspornHintze, a sophomore for the Ironwomen,  shot 49 out of 50 targets during the first competition shoot of the season.  Hintze was also a important fixture on Vermilion's 2018 Clay Target squad as well, earning the Runner-Up in the Women's Division at the first-ever MCAC Fall Championships in 2018.

Notably, Hintze, is a two-sport contributor at VCC where she is also competing for the Vermilion volleyball program. A force on the court as well as the trap range, Hintze - a Fisheries & Wildlife Management major -had eight kills, two aces and three blocks in the VCC 3-0 victory over Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College for first-year head coach Nikki Kosik.

Two Divisions - Red and Blue - comprise the MCAC Clay Target league this year.  With the addition of three colleges; Alexandria Technical & Community College, Ridgewater College and North Dakota State College of Science, MCAC squads are grouped into one of two six-team Divisions.  Learn More about the divisions here; or go to this link: http://mcac.claytargetscoring.com/teamlist

Colleges with a roster size of 23 athletes to 45 athletes are in the Red Division this year; Alexandria Technical & Community College, Southwest Technical College; Lake Superior College; Ridgewater College; NDSCS and Vermilion Community College.

Schools with a roster size under 23 are found in the Blue Division.  They include Northland Community & Technical CollegeLake Region State College; Itasca Community College; Minnesota West Community & Technical College; Pine Technical & Community College and Hibbing Community College

In addition to the twelve varsity programs noted above, at least two other community colleges in Minnesota are fielding club teams this fall; Minnesota State College-Southeast, with campuses in Red Wing and Winona and MCAC member Central Lakes College both have active club squads on campus in 2019. 

Teams will continue to compete weekly, as they march toward the 2019 MCAC Clay Target Fall Championship, held in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on Tuesday, October 15. 

Registration for the Fall Championships is currently open and all student-athletes and participating varsity programs are eligible to compete.  New this year, the Fall Championships will feature Novice, Junior Varsity & Varsity levels of recognition. 

Clay Target is the fastest growing sport in the upper Midwest and around the county.  The Minnesota College Athletic Conference is proud to be the first varsity, two-year college athletic Conference to provide a platform for Clay Target teams and coaches.
