Spartan Golf Program Advances to National Championships

M State golfers earn their 9th consecutive trip to the NJCAA Division III Golf National Championships

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and M State-Fergus Falls met earlier this week to compete in the Region XIII National Qualifier competition in Lake City, Minnesota. 
 
The Spartan men's golf team claimed the title with a two-day composite score of 642 (Day 1-314, Day 2 - 328).  The victory marks the ninth consecutive trip to the National tournament for the Spartans and currently stands as the longest running appearance streak in NJCAA Division III golf. 
 
Top performer in the event for the was Spartan Grant Inniger,  taking medalist honors with a two-day 159 (76-83)  Inniger finished just ahead of Wyatt Blomseth 160 (77-83) and Southwest Tech's Mike MacKinnon 160 (79-81).  Spartan Carter Justesen delivered an outstanding second day for the Spartans, cardeing the lowest round of the group on Tuesday with at 79. Justesen and his fellow golfers had to endure a course that offered challenging conditions with winds up to 30 mph.
 

Representing M State on the women's side was Lexi Poyze, who led the Spartan women with a two-day 201 (98-103) and teammate,  Carley Baumann carded a 219 (112-107)

For M State-Fergus Falls, head coach Jason Retzlaff said: "It was an extremely tough day for scoring with the wind blowing all over, but our young men did what they needed to do after a playing very well in round one.  I am very proud of this group and their efforts this fall.."  Retzlaff went on to note: "Competing at the National Tournament as a team is such a memorable experience and I'm thrilled this team has earned a chance to compete with the best next June. I can't say enough about the quality of young men on this team.  Congrats to Grant Inniger on earning medalist honors."   

Retzlaff also had praise for both Spartan women on their outing:  "Lexi Poyzer and Carley Baumann had a very nice two days and did a fantastic job representing our golf program this fall.  They are both very good players and high character student-athletes. We are very thankful that they are playing such a big role in reigniting our women's golf program."

The NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship will be held from June 2-5, 2020 at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY.  The Spartans claimed the title in 2012 and have finished third in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
