MCAC Baseball Names Players-of-the-Week

With much of the state staring down a spring snowstorm and cold temperatures, a handful of baseball teams around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference were able to get outside at some neutral-site fields at Winona State University, Viterbo University and La Cresent High School in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin to pick up some much-needed contests.  Some of the best performances of the weekend have been tabbed worthy of Player-of-the-Week honors for the week ending Sunday, April 1. 

NORTHERN DIVISION  

                   

Pitcher-of-the-Week

Brady Beyl

Freshman

Itasca Community College 

Itasca Community College freshman Brady Beyl put together a great pitching performance against NCJAA Division II Dakota County Technical College and has earned the Northern Division Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for his efforts. 

In a 7-inning, complete-game outing for ICC,  Beyl had four strikeouts and scattered four hits.  He did not give up a walk and allow his team to earn a split on the day with the Blue Knights. 

Itasca is scheduled to next play on Saturday and Sunday, April 7-8, when they will again face Dakota County Technical College.                     

           

Player-of-the-Week

Luis Rodriguez

Freshman 

Rainy River Community College 

In games played at La Crescent High School in southeastern Minnesota, Rainy River freshman Luis Rodriguez earned Northern Division Player-of-the-Week honors for a strong set of games against Northland CTC and Minnesota West CTC. 

Rodriguez connected for three hits over the two days and led RRCC with four runs scored.  He had a double and RBI in a tight, 8-7 loss to MnWest.  An outfielder, Rodriquez was solid defensively for the Voyagers. 

Rainy River is next scheduled to play on April 7 at Western Technical College.

        M State Fergus Falls   

  

           

In a contest against NJCAA Division II Dakota County Technical College, M State hurler Chandler Gramm put forth a solid effort for the Spartans. 

In a game played at Winona State University, Gramm went 5.2 innings for M State, striking out five batters along the way while give up seven hits.  He was tagged for four runs on the day, all earned, in the 6-5 loss to DCTC.  

M State Fergus Falls is next scheduled to play on Thursday, April 5 against Western Technical College.

Jeremie Garcia

Sophomore

Minnesota West CTC 

Jeremie Garcia, a MnWest sophomore from Miami, Florida, put together a solid set of games in some neutral-site action for Minnesota West CTC as they took on Northland CTC and Rainy River Community College at La Cresent High School over the weekend. 

Garcia went had 10 hits in 15 at-bats, while also earning two walks.  On the basepaths, Garcia was 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts and scored nine runs for the BlueJays.  He tallied one extra-base hit and five RBI's for the week.   

Weather-permitting, Minnesota West is scheduled to play next against Wednesday, April 11 against Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

Pitcher-of-the-Week 

Jean Perez

Freshman  

Minnesota West CTC

 

Jean Perez, a freshman from Puerto Rico, turned in a complete-game shutout performance for the Minnesota West BlueJays on March 30 against Rainy River Community College.  

Perez had seven innings pitched, conceded only two hits and no runs, while walking three.   He struck out six Rainy River CC batters and tallied a 0.00 ERA for the performance.

MnWest is 5-11 on the season and went 2-2 over the past week against MCAC foes Rainy River and Northland CTC.  Weather-permitting, Minnesota West is scheduled to play next against Wednesday, April 11 against Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

About baseball in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference:

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference boasts a strong tradition in America's pastime; over fifty years of collegiate competition has prepared student-athletes in the MCAC to pursue careers at four year college programs as well as professional ranks.

Currently the MCAC Baseball squads compete in a three-division set-up.  Northern Division teams include Hibbing Community College, Itasca Community College, Mesabi Range College, Rainy River Community College and Vermilion Community College.  The Central Division is home to St. Cloud Technical & Community College, Central Lakes College,  Ridgewater College, M State Fergus Falls and  Northland Community & Technical College.   In the Southern Division, Anoka-Ramsey CC, Minnesota West CTC, Riverland Community College, Rochester Community & Technical College and Western (WI) Technical College compete for a divisional title.

Beginning with the 2018 spring season, MCAC Division Champions and Divisional runner-up teams will advance to the 2018 NJCAA Division III Regional Tournament.  Additionally, a seventh playoff slot will be allocated to the highest ranked MCAC team as designated by the 2018 Region XIII which did not earn a championship or runner-up finish in divisional play.
