MCAC Baseball Players-of-the-Week

Rochester, MN-

It has been a challenging spring for many baseball teams in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, but several teams were able to find playable conditions over the past week.  The best performances from those contests have been put forward for MCAC Player-of-the-Week honors and Pitcher-of-Week honors. 

NORTHERN DIVISION 


Pitcher-of-the-Week

Jonathan Castellanos

Sophomore

Rainy River Comunity College 

 

Earning his first MCAC career victory this week was Rainy River Community College pitcher Jonathan Castellanos, and with it, Northern Division Pitcher-of-theWeek honors.

Castellanos, from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, scattered three hits over five innings of work while walking only two batters. He struck nine total, including the side to end the fifth inning and close out his work in 8-2 RRCC win over Mesabi Range. 

Rainy River next plays on Wednesday, April 25 against Hibbing Community College, with first pitch set for 2pm. 

                 

Player-of-the-Week

Evan Jerome

Freshman

Hibbing Community College 

Hibbing freshman Evan Jerome had a monster week at the plate for the Cardinals, and in doing so, has earned Northern Division Player-of-the-Week for his efforts. 

Jerome had 13 hits in 20 at-bats, and accounted for 8 RBI's.  He cracked a home run, had two triples, two doubles and earned two walks.  Additionally, the Glenwood, Utah product swiped two bases on three attempts for Hibbing. 

HCC is next scheduled to play at Vermilion Community College on April, 28, in Ely, Minnesota. 

 

CENTRAL DIVISION

Blake Fetting

Freshman

             Northland CTC                                  

Blake Fetting leads the league in home runs (4) and his team in slugging percentage (.593), as Northland has gone 8-2 over the past two weeks. 

With good field conditions prevailing in Thief River Falls, Fetting and his team hosted several MCAC sides over the weekend, with the Pioneers going 2-1, with victories over ARCC (8-1) and Minnesota West (2-1), while also dropping a 4-2 decision to MnWest. 

Northland is next scheduled to play on Wednesday, April 25 against Central Lakes College.  First pitch is set for 2:30pm                                                           

                    

Pitcher of the Week   

Devin Bush 

Freshman

M State - Fergus Falls  

M State pitcher Devin Bush (Fr, Fargo, ND) had a strong outing for the Spartans in a 8-0 shutout win over MCAC Northern Division side Vermilion Community College.

Bush worked seven total innings, scattering 4 hits across 28 VCC batters, while striking out seven.  He walked only three batters and went the distance to earn the shutout for M State.  He also scored a run and drew two walks for his team. 

M State is scheduled play next against SCTCC on Wednesday, April 25 at home in Fergus Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm. 

 

SOUTHERN DIVISION

           Gavin Roosen    

             Freshman           

  Riverland Community College 

Gavin Roosen, an freshman pitcher from Kenyon, Minnesota, had a great outing for Riverland Community College recently and has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week in the Southern Division for his efforts. 

Roosen, sitting 3-0 on the year, worked six innings and conceded only one hit to Minnesota West in a recent 10-0 win for RCC.  Facing 21 hitters, Roose walked two, struck out 8.  He also helped himself at the plate, collecting a hit and an RBI in the victory.                          

Riverland is next scheduled to play on Wednesday, April 25 at RCTC.  First pitch is set for 2pm. 

 

Player-of-the-Week

Aramis Linares

Freshman 

Minnesota West CTC 

Aramis Linares - a freshman outfielder from Minnesota West CTC -had a productive week at the plate, helping lead the BlueJays to a 3-1 week over MCAC opponents at Northland Community & Technical College. 

Linares hit .615, going 8-for-13 from the plate, accruing five RBI's and scoring four runs himself. He also had three stolen bases for Minnesota West, while being perfect defensively, dealing successfully with all four of his put-out chances while patrolling left field. 

The BlueJays, winners of five of their last six games, are next scheduled to play Wednesday, April 25 at Dordt College. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm. 

 

 

About Baseball in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference:

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference boasts a strong tradition in America's pastime; over fifty years of collegiate competition has prepared student-athletes in the MCAC to pursue careers at four year college programs as well as professional ranks.

Currently the MCAC Baseball squads compete in a three-division set-up.  Northern Division teams include Hibbing Community College, Itasca Community College, Mesabi Range College, Rainy River Community College and Vermilion Community College.  The Central Division is home to St. Cloud Technical & Community College, Central Lakes College,  Ridgewater College, M State Fergus Falls and  Northland Community & Technical College.   In the Southern Division, Anoka-Ramsey CC, Minnesota West CTC, Riverland Community College, Rochester Community & Technical College and Western (WI) Technical College compete for a divisional title.

Beginning with the 2018 spring season, MCAC Division Champions and Divisional runner-up teams will advance to the 2018 NJCAA Division III Regional Tournament.  Additionally, a seventh playoff slot will be allocated to the highest ranked MCAC team as designated by the 2018 Region XIII which did not earn a championship or runner-up finish in divisional play.
