MCAC Baseball Weekly Honors

While snow still impacts much of Minnesota this week, several baseball squads from around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference escaped to warmer temperatures for some early-season contests in Florida and Arizona.  The best of those performances have been tabbed as Players and Pitchers-of-the-Week in the MCAC for the first full week of competition in the 2019 season.

MCAC Southern Division

Trevor Stuckey

Clermont, FL

Minnesota West CTC Bluejay pitcher Trevor Stuckey has earned the first Southern Division Pitcher-of-the-Week award for the 2019 season.

The freshman from Clermont, Florida got the nod against NJCAA Division II Lakeland Community College and responded by throwing a complete game four-hit effort for the win on Saturday.  Stuckey held Lakeland scoreless over seven innings, scattering four hits and only walking two.  He had eight strikeouts and did not concede a run on the day. 

Minnesota West will continue play on their spring trip with contests against Mesabi Range College, the Community College of Rhode Island and Sussex County this week.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                             

Christian Aviles

Christian Aviles a freshman middle infielder at Minnesota West CTC from Imokolee, Florida, has been tabbed as the Southern Division Player-of-the-Week in the opening week of baseball across the Minnesota College Athletic Conference

Aviles turned in a .500 average this past week with with eight hits in 16 at-bats, including two extra base efforts.  He scored four runs and added four RBI's to the Blue Jay offense and was 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts.  Defensively, he had a 1.000 fielding percentage which included three double plays turned by MnWest for the week. 

The Blue Jays will continue play on their spring trip with upcoming games against MCAC foe Mesabi Range College, the Community College of Rhode Island and Sussex County this week.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MCAC Central Division 

Player & Pitcher of the Week

 

Ronaldo Fernandez

Hialeah, FL

Ronaldo Fernadez, a freshman at St. Cloud Technical & Community College from Hialeah, Florida has been tabbed Pitcher-of-the-Week in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference for the week ending March 10. 

Fernandez threw 4.2 innings, conceding only one hit and held Penn State-Hazelton scoreless during his time on the mound.  He racked up 12 strikeouts in the effort, which led to the first Cyclone win of the 2019 campaign. 

SCTCC will face Itasca Community College on Sunday, March 31 in their first action against MCAC competition. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2pm in St. Cloud. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                               

Jordan Mercado

Jordan Mercado, an infielder for St. Cloud Technical & Community College, has been tabbed the Central Division Player-of-the-Week for the opening week of MCAC baseball. 

Mercado scored seven Cyclone runs for the 4-3 SCTCC squad, while going 6-for-15 and drawing five walks.  He carded a .550 on-base percentage for his team and stole six bases. Defensively, Mercado contributed seven put-outs and 10 assists in 18 total fielding chances. 

The Cyclones will take on Itasca Community College on Sunday, March 31 in their first action against MCAC competition. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2pm in St. Cloud.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                                                                                

 

MCAC Northern Division 

Player & Pitcher of the Week

 

 

Max Carlson

So. / 2B-OF

Virginia, MN 

  

Max Carlson, a student-athlete at Mesabi Range College, has claimed Player-of-the-Week in the Northern Division to open the 2019 MCAC baseball season. 

Carlson hit .333 over three games, knocking in an RBI and claiming a pair of bases. Defensively, he converted on all his chances to turn in a 1.000 fielding percentage for the Norse. 

Mesabi Range will face Minnesota West, Waubonsee Community College, Bismarck State and Lake Region State to round out their spring trip.               

 

          

Derrick Calvillo

 Fr. / Catcher

Tucson, AZ

Derrick Calvillo, a catcher at Hibbing Community College, hit for a .500 average in the opening week of the season for the Cardinals and had been tabbed the Northern Division Player-of-the-Week for his efforts. 

In 14 at-bats, Calvillo had seven hits, including three doubles for HCC.  The freshman from Tucson, Arizona knocked in twelve RBI's for Hibbing in their first six contests of 2019, including a 9-8 win over SUNY-Adirondack. Defensively, he had a 1.000 fielding percentage and has thrown out a pair of base-runners so far in his squad's 2019 spring trip.

Hibbing will wrap up their spring trip with a pair of games against the JV team of Rollins College.  Their first action in Minnesota will be against the University of Wisconsin-Barron County in a double-header scheduled for Saturday, March 30 in Proctor, Minnesota.
