MCAC Football: Western Division Players-of-the-Week

The first weekend of Divisional play for football teams in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference gave fans, families and followers a chance to get a first look at how the playoff races may unfold.  The best of many outstanding performances around the MCAC have been tabbed as 'Players-of-the-Week' in the Western Division for the week ending Sunday, September 15.

MCAC Western Division 

Player-of-the-Week, Offense

Northland Community & Technical College picked up a key victory Saturday thanks in large part to the arm and feet of Craig Wells, in a week three Western Division 38-33 win on the road at Dakota College-Bottineau. 

Wells was passed for 392 yards on 22 completions, four touchdowns for the Pioneers, with a longest completion of 80 yards. The freshman from West Palm Beach, Florida also ran 16 times for 43 yards a touchdown for NCTC.  Wells did not have an interception in his 34 attempts on the day and connected with four different Northland receivers on touchdown passes. 

Northland now sits at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MCAC West.  Next Saturday, September 22, NCTC will travel to Fergus Falls to take on Spartans of M State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm.

Player-of-the-Week, Defense

Tristin Murrin  claimed his second Defensive POW award of the 2018 season with a 15-tackle performance for Northland CTC in their 38-33 victory over Dakota College-Bottineau.           

Murrin had 11 solo stops among his tackles, including a sack and four tackles behind the line of scrimmage against the 'Jacks. The freshman from Richmond, Virginia has 36 tackles already on the season, leading the Conference in that category, along with two fumble recoveries. 

Northland raised it's record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MCAC Western Division.   NCTC will travel to Fergus Falls to take on M State in a week four contest; kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm.

Player-of-the-Week, Special Teams

BlueJay placekicker Caleb Tinklenberg was busy on Saturday in the Minnesota West CTC 58-38 win over M State-Fergus Falls.  

Tinklenberg was a perfect 8-for-8 in PAT's on the day for Minnesota West, and knocked three of his nine kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks, while averaging 56.9 yards per kick.  

In addition to his kicking prowess, Tinklenberg lined up as a receiver for MnWest, making three catches for 48 yards on the day.  The BlueJays will take on North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton in week four. 

 

Notable Performances around the Western Division:                 

     

Quarterback Frank Cromer came off the bench to replace injured Andrew Ortiz and went 14-for-24 with four touchdowns.  He picked up 210 yards passing with a longest throw of 41 and no interceptions. Reginald Colson III had three touchdown catches for the BlueJays, while Khaileb Desmond rushed for 78 yards on 13 carries and had a TD.  Defensively, Juan Moore returned a fumble 59 yards, had a pass breakup and 8 total stops. Steven Lucas Jr. returned a pick 85 yards for a score.

 

   

Wildcat punt returner Joel Kromah returned a kick 68 yards for a touchdown, while Spencer Skeesick had an outstanding day kicking the football, going 3-for-3 on PAT's, 2-for-2 on field goals and putting two of his kickoffs into the endzone. Prince Kruah ran for 111 yards on only seven carries, scoring once and averaging an amazing 15.9 yards a run.  Kingston Myles also rushed 17 times for 51 yards on the day.    

 

   

Jackson Argoe was 12 of 25 for 184 yards and two TD's.  Jaylen Wilson had 14 carries for 111 yards while Jalin Tolbert led DCB with three catches for 64 yards. Aaron Appleton had 10 Jacks tackles and Malik McKane had nine.  The 'Jacks defense had a pair of sacks, with Nekio Hayes-Thurman and Justin Michel combining for one.  Tyree Humes had five solo tackles on the day as well. 

 

             

Pioneer wideout  Devonaire Clairington had five catches for 158 yards and two TD's against Dakota College, while Dwayne Taylor and Collin St. Julien both had touchdown receptions. Justin Murray had a 44-yard kickoff return and a 19-yard punt return on special teams for NCTC, as well as two interceptions against the 'Jacks.  Jonas Dorvil matched the game high for tackles with 15 stops, including four tackles-for-loss and a pass breakup for Northland. 

 

              

Winston Sweeting had another big day throwing the football, going 29-55 for 401 yards and three touchdowns. He did not have an interception in his 55 attempts against MnWestDion Muneryln and Mykhal Chavis combined for 90 yards on the ground in 20 total carries. Sterling Alexander had five grabs for 91 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Curtis Edwards had 11 tackles, while Kyle Zuber had eight stops. 

QB Bryant Walker had 163 yards on nine completions, while Rylan Molinaro had five catches for the Warriors. Jeff Zulma had 11 tackles for Ridgewater, including four tackles-for-loss against the Wildcats. Manlizi Arrington and Derek Benoit both had nine tackles apiece for Ridgewater.
