In an important weekend of MCAC football action, several key performances helped lift football teams to crucial wins across the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.
The best of several great efforts have been tabbed as Players-of-the-Week in the MCAC Eastern Division of football for the week ending October 7.

MCAC Eastern Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week

Cameron Strapp, freshman linebacker from Lewisville, Texas at Itasca Community Community College has been tabbed as the MCAC Eastern Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Strapp tallied six tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including three sacks for ICC against Central Lakes College on Saturday. He put together ten solo stops and added three assists for the Vikings in a tough, 31-28 loss. Itasca will host Rochester Community & Technical College on October 13 in their last Divisional match-up of the 2018 season. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm.

In a game that reportedly featured 967 passing yards, quarterbacks Armani Cebalos (Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College) and Breon Jackson (Vermilion Community College) share the Eastern Division Offensive Player-of-Week honors. VCC signal caller Jackson was 23-of-48 for 545 yards and five touchdowns, while Cebalos threw for 422 yards on a 16-for-27 day for FDLTCC. Jackson is also credited with 80 yards rushing, bringing his single game output to 625 yards individually on the game. With the win, Vermilion improves to 1-5 overall while FDLTCC falls to 3-3 on the year.

Central Lakes College placekicker Jack Quaal hit a 19-yard field goal on the last offensive play of the game for the Raiders to secure a 31-28 victory over Itasca. Quaal, in his first season of playing football, had two extra points on CLC scores before his fourth quarter heroics, and delivered when it counted on his only field goal attempt of the day. In addition to accounting for five Raider points, Quaal hit five kick-offs for a total of 206 yards, good for a 41.2 average. With the win, Central Lakes is atop the Eastern Division standings at 4-0, and are 4-2 overall. CLC will face FDLTCC on the road on Saturday, October 13. Kickoff is set for 5pm.

Notable Performances Around the Eastern Division:
Jordan Thompson, a wide receiver from Central Lakes College had 10 receptions for 159 yards in CLC's 31-28 win over Itasca Community College. Jake Franklin threw for 221 yards on a 19-for-33 day for the Raiders. Marnez Trotter had an interception for CLC on defense, while Gabriel 'Bubba' Magalei led the Raiders with 11 tackles, including two sacks.
Sam Moberg had 12 tackles for the Vikings in their 31-28 loss to CLC; seven of his tackles were of the solo variety. Maleek Davis had an interception and pass break-up. Mitchell Miller threw for 234 yards and a touchdown, with 13 completions on the day, while Jesse Sherwood and Joshua Booker combined for 131 yards on the ground. DauQuan Mackey caught five passes for 123 yards and placekicker Enrico Francato was a perfect 4-for-4 on PAT's.
In a 17-10 loss to Mesabi Range College, running back Greg Henry ran for 117 yards on 22 carries. Cazz Martin had three catches for 27 yards and three kickoff returns for 81 yards, including a 36 yard effort. Defesnively, Keshon Williams and Peter Ongera both had Yellowjacket interceptions and Jamel Smith racked up 14 tackles with a sack. Dylan DuMarce had a sack and five tackles. Juan Martinez connected on a 27-yard field goal and was 1-for-1 in PAT's.
Mesabi Range picked up a 17-10 win on the road behind the rushing of Torrey Patterson and Ny'Travious Barkley, who combined for 188 yards on the ground, with each back scoring a touchdown. Placekicker/punter Connor Cusick hit a 42 yard field goal and was 2-for-2 on PAT's, along with 326 yards in punting efforts, averaging 40.8 yards a kick. Darryll Munoz had two picks and Ja'Quez Davis one for the Norsemen secondary. Chris Parker and D'Angelo Grays led MRC with nine tackles each.
Vermilion Community College picked up their first win of the 2018 campaign with Brandon Martin being credited for 234 yards receiving on just six catches, with two touchdowns. Oscar Lopez is reported to have 149 yards in receptions on five grabs. Rommel Reynolds had two interceptions while Da'Shawn Griffin also had a pick. Defensively, Lipheteson Pierre and Vernell Fletcher combined for 10 tackles, with Pierre notching four solo stops.
FDLTCC receiver Trebian Suggs is credited with 139 yards on seven catches, while La Darin McAllister had six catches for 105 yards in the FDLTCC 41-40 loss to Vermilion. Suggs also had 122 yards in punt returns for the Thunder. Dawayne Hearns and Armand Keely led FDL with four tackles and an inteception apiece. Cedrick King and KeAndre Smith also had FDLTCC interceptions. |
