Central Lakes College accomplished something no other NJCAA men's basketball team had been able to do in the 2018-19 season; beat Suffolk County Community College.
Northern Division Coach-of-the-Year Jim Russell and his squad defeated top-seed and previously undefeated (27-0) Suffolk County 82-68 in Rochester this evening. With the win, the Raiders simultaneously knock off the nation's top team and put themselves in a strong position to play their way to the NJCAA Division III National Championship.
CLC's Chris Buckley - the top-rated player in the MCAC regular season - added to his stellar 2018-19 season totals with a 25-point performance to lead the Raiders. Teammate Tyree'on Johnson added 16 points as Central Lakes registered one of the biggest wins in the history of the program. Johnson not only bolstered Buckley's high scoring exploits on the scoreboard, he also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to limit the SCCC Sharks second-look opportunities on the evening.
As a team, Central Lakes looked at home in the friendly confines of RCTC's UCR gymnasium; the Raiders hit 48.4% from the field, including 42.1% from 3-point territory.
