M-State sits third at National Championships, look to move up today

Rochester, Mn--

After two days of competition at the NJCAA Division III Men's National golf championships, M-State took over sole possession of third place by shooting a 315 on Day Two.

The top two spots in the competition continue to be held by Georgia Military (307 round - 607 total) and Columbus State (308 round - 621 total), but the Spartans were able to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the field with their solid second day tally.  College of DuPage moved into fourth place all alone, with a 637 overall.

Chris Swenson led M-State by firing a 74 in the 2nd round, with teammate Nick Kress turning in a 79 on the day.

Individually, Ben Abrahamson of Hibbing Community College shot a 84, while Nick Moe of Mesabi Range carded a 86.  Abrahamson sits in a tie for 56th while Moe is tied at 44.

M-State head coach, Jason Retzlaff noted, "Chris Swenson's ball striking was superb today.  He also hit a lot of good putts that didn't quite go in which could have made his round even lower. He did a great job of leading our team today."   Coach Retzlaff went on to note that for M-State to make its way up the last rungs of the championship ladder, they will need to take advantage of the longer, par 5 holes found at Chautauqua Golf Club and limit mistakes on day three.

The Spartans hit the course this morning, paired with the two schools just above them in the standings; Georgia Military and Columbus State.
