A pair of 1-1 ties which were settled in penalty kicks have produced the two Region XIII finalist teams in men's soccer, and both participants hail from the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.
In White Bear Lake, Minnesota, MCAC squad Anoka-Ramsey Community College traveled to NJCAA independent Century College for the rubber match of the teams 2017 fall season. Century had dealt the Golden Rams a 4-2 loss on August 31st and the two teams battled to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on September 29th. The third meeting of the two teams also finished in a 2OT tie, knotted at one goal apiece. This time however, penalty kicks were necessary to determine who advanced to the Region XIII final on Saturday, October 21st. On Wednesday, Century was able to only convert one spot-kick while ARCC hit from 12-yard mark four times. The 4-1 advantage on PK's sends Anoka-Ramsey on to the Region XIII Championship and ends Century's season in the semi-finals.
In Duluth, Minnesota, two MCAC opponents tangled for their third meeting of the fall as well, as Riverland Community College was the visiting side to host Lake Superior College. The IceHawks finished atop the Minnesota College Athletic Conference men's soccer standings in the fall and had defeated Riverland by 7-1 and 3-2 margins during the regular season. The Blue Devils matched Lake Superior in the score column on this occasion, with Igor Aguir drawing first blood for the visitors at the 25' mark of the first half; Lake Superior's Noel Idelwald evened the score midway through the second half and both teams failed to produce a winning goal in the two overtimes. Lake Superior took the penalty kick tiebreaker - and with it - earned the right to host the Region XIII Championship final. Riverland's season concludes at 3-5-4 overall.
The Anoka-Ramsey Community College (6-7-3) vs. Lake Superior College (6-4-1) NJCAA Region XIII Championship men's soccer match will be held in Duluth, Minnesota on Saturday, October 21st. Match kickoff time is set for Noon at Lincoln Park Middle School.
