MCAC Softball Players-of-the-Week

As things warm up around the state, softball teams in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference have been able to get to the diamond to begin league play. The top performers from the past week have been tabbed as Players or Pitchers-of-the-Week in their respective Divisions. 

Northern Division

Player-of-the-Week  

Megan Swedberg

Sophomore

Northland CTC 

  

 

Megan Swedberg, a sophomore student-athlete at Northland Community & Technical College from Ogema, Minnesota, has earned Player-of-the-Week honors in the Northern Division softball ranks. 

Swedberg cracked two home runs among her four extra base hits across four games this past weekend.  She accounted for 14 RBI's and scored six runs herself for the Pioneers, who took three-of-four games at home in Thief River Falls.  Her .692 batting average and strong defensive play at first base sparked Northland as many MCAC squads were able to play outside for the first time since spring trips in March. 

Northland and Swedberg are next scheduled to play on Saturday, April 28 against Itasca Community College. 

 

Northern Division 

Pitcher-of-the-Week

Kayla Larson

Sophomore

Central Lakes College 

 

Kayla Larson, a sophomore pitcher for Central Lakes College, has been tabbed Northern Division Pitcher-of-the-Week for her strong outings against Mesabi Range College and Itasca Community College recently.

Larson had a complete game one-hit gem against Mesabi Range and followed up that performance by coming out of the bullpen to pick up a save in two innings of work against nationally ranked Itasca Community College. 

Larson's stat line for the week included seven innings pitched, zero runs conceded, 13 strikeouts and a 0.00 era. Larson and Central Lakes will next play on Wednesday, April 25 at the Findorf Athletic Complex against SCTCC. 

 

 

 

Southern Division 

Player-of-the-Week 

Breanna Stang

Freshman

Anoka-Ramsey Community College

Breanna Stang, a freshman middle infielder from St. Nicholas, Minnesota, has picked up Southern Division Player-of-the-Week honors for her role in a solid week for the Anoka-Ramsey Golden Rams. 

Strang went 10-of-16 from the plate and earned two walks, while knocking a pair of doubles.  She drove in eight runs total on the week, including a four-hit, four-RBI performance against Ridgewater College. Strang was also 2-for-2 in the stolen base department for ARCC. 

Anoka-Ramsey will play next on Wednesday, April 25, against Itasca Community College. 

                               

 

Southern Division 

Pitcher-of-the-Week

Lindsey Swanson

Sophomore

Anoka-Ramsey Community College

                                       

Lindsey Swanson, a sophomore pitcher from Mounds View, Minnesota, has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week status in the Southern Division for Anoka-Ramsey Community College.                        

Swanson went 2-1 on the week for ARCC, with 18 innings pitched and fourteen at-bats from the plate.  As a pitcher, Swanson allowed only 23 hits and 18 runs against, while striking out 18 batters and walking only four.  As a hitter, Swason went 8-for-14 with a home run and 6 RBI's. 

Anoka-Ramsey will play next on Wednesday, April 25, against Itasca Community College. 

 

About Softball in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference:

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference boasts a strong tradition in fastpitch softball; multiple decades of intercollegiate NJCAA competition has allowed student-athletes in the MCAC to pursue careers at four-year college programs and compete for National Championships. 

Currently, MCAC Softball teams compete in a two-division alignment.  Northern Division teams include Hibbing Community College, Itasca Community College, Mesabi Range College, Rainy River Community College, Central Lakes College,  Northland Community & Technical College.   The Southern Division is home to St. Cloud Technical & Community College, Ridgewater College, M State Fergus Falls, Anoka-Ramsey CC, Minnesota West CTC, Riverland Community College and Rochester Community & Technical College. 

At the conclusion of the 2018 spring season, MCAC Division Champions and Divisional runner-up, as well as third and fourth-place finishing teams, will advance to the 2018 NJCAA Division III Region XIIIA and B Tournaments.  The Region XIII A & B Tournaments will be hosted by the regular season champion.   Winners of the 2018 NJCAA Region XIII A & B tournaments will advance to the 2018 NJCAA Division III National Tournament, held in Rochester, Minnesota on May 17-19.
