While snow still impacts much of Minnesota this week, several softball squads from around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference escaped to warmer temperatures for some early-season contests in Florida and Arizona. The best of those performances have been tabbed as Players and Pitchers-of-the-Week in the MCAC for the first full week of competition in the 2019 season.

St. Cloud Technical & Community College softball student-athlete Sam Patton had been tabbed the MCAC Southern Division Pitcher-of-the-Week in the opening week of action of the 2019 season. Patton earned a win over MCAC foe and 2018 Northern Division champion Itasca Community College on March 8 in a game played at the Chain-of-Lakes complex in Florida. The freshman hurler faced 25 Viking batters and she scattered six hits over five innings of work. Patton conceded only one earned run and struck out eight batters en route to the victory. SCTCC and Itasca will meet again this month when they face off at the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minnesota on Monday, March 25.

Cleopatra Nystrom, a sophomore at Anoka-Ramsey Community College from Stillwater, Minnesota has earned the first Player-of-the-Week in the MCAC Southern Division 2019 softball season. Nystrom has hit for a .579 average so far for the Golden Rams, scoring three runs herself and knocking in two RBI's. On the basepaths, Nystrom has stolen three bases; three of her 11 hits have been doubles this year. Anoka-Ramsey and Nystrom will wrap up their spring trip this week with games against Crowder College and Lewis & Clark Community College. They are next in action against Hibbing at the Irish Dome in Rosemount on Friday, March 29. |

Central Lakes College picked up their first two wins of the 2019 season with Kallie Plantenberg in the circle and she has earned Northern Division Pitcher-of-the-Week for her efforts. The sophomore Raider from Eden Valley, Minnesota scattered 19 hits over the course of two, 7-inning games and struck out a pair of batters in the process. Plantenberg and her CLC teammates defeated MCAC Southern Division foes Anoka-Ramsey CC (6-4) and Ridgewater College (18-7) as a part of their 2019 spring trip. Central Lakes will face Crowder College and the College of DuPage as they wrap up their spring break trip this week. The Raiders are scheduled to play Riverland Community College on Saturday, March 30 at the Irish Dome later this month.

Hailey Aho a softball student-athlete at Mesabi Range College has earned Player-of-the-Week in the Northern Division to open up MCAC Softball action in 2019. Aho was 7-for-13 at the plate for the Norse, collecting two doubles, a triple and a home run in a productive offensive week. She had 4 RBI's total and scored four runs herself while only striking out once. She also stole a base and played excellent defensively from her middle infield position. Mesabi Range and Aho will face the JV team of Marietta College as well as Niagara County Community College as they wrap up their spring break trip this week. |
