Northland, Anoka-Ramsey Top Poll in MCAC Women's Basketball Preview

Anoka-Ramsey & Northland Take Top Spots in MCAC Preseason  Poll

NJCAA National Tournament participants  Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Northland Community & Technical College were selected by the league coaches as the Southern Division and Northern Division preseason favorites in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference for the upcoming 2017-18 women's basketball season.

The Pioneers received a majority of the first place votes in the North while Golden Ram women's squad was seen as a strong favorite in the South.  Both ARCC and NCTC advanced to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in 2016-17, where both Anoka-Ramsey Northland earned a 1-2 tally. Several schools that will feature veteran coaches at helm heading into this season, making for an exciting and competitive 2017-18 season in the MCAC.

There are also several new mentors taking up the sidelines this winter in the Conference.  Krystal Brodeen will lead the Vermilion Ironmen as they look to climb up the Northern Division ranks. Also in the North, Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College has a new leader in Kari Diver, who takes over the Thunder program.   James Fassett is the new head coach at St. Cloud Technical & Community College, guiding the new-look Cyclones and Doug Waldner brings back the Riverland Blue Devils to the MCAC Southern Division.  At Central Lakes, Randy Swanhorst will start his first full year with the Raiders, as he was a mid-season hire in 2016-17.

In MCAC Pre-season Coaches Polls and in Player-of-the-Week voting, coaches do not list their own team and cannot vote for their own nominees.

The regular season championships in the Southern and Northern Division will be tabulated by the 14-game MCAC Divisional schedule.  Each team will play the other teams in their division twice, in home-and-away format.  MCAC teams will also compete in Inter-Divisional games against selected opponents from the opposite Division during the early portion of the regular season- these contests count only towards overall season marks.  Beginning in January, teams enter Divional play and in late February,  MCAC Northern and Southern Division Regular Season Champions will be awarded.  The top four finishing teams from each Division will advance to NJCAA Region XIII Tournaments at sites to be determined.   The winners of the NJCAA Region XIII A and B tournaments advance to the NJCAA Division III National Championships.  With Lake Superior College entering league play in 2018-19, expect to see a new format for Divisional and Conference games in upcoming years.

The 2017-18 NJCAA Division III women's basketball season gets underway in early November.  The NJCAA National Player-of-the-Week for 2017-18 will debut on November 7th, 2017.  For important dates in NJCAA women's basketball, click this link.
