A pair of women's basketball standouts have earned Player-of-the-Week honors in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, as squads from around the MCAC Southern & Northern Divisions head into their third week of play in 2018-19. The week also included the first-ever women's basketball contests at Lake Superior College, in which the IceHawks went 1-1 to start their debut season.

Minnesota West Community & Technical College women's basketball player Emily Shaffer was a force on the boards as her LadyJay team picked up their second win of the season. Playing in a pair of games against Iowa Lakes Community College and Southwestern Community College, Shaffer lead MnWest to a 1-1 record against the NJCAA Division II programs. The freshman from Worthington grabbed 19 total rebounds across the two contests, and scored 33 points along the way. Her 24-point effort in the LadyJays 82-67 win over SCC led all scorers in the contest. She also had a good night shooting the basketball, hitting 9-of-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from behind the arc. Minnesota West is back in action this week with games against the JV team of Mt. Marty and a second game against ILCC.

Sophomore forward Daeja Monroe (Houston, TX) led Rainy River Community College to two more wins this past week, upping their overall record to 4-0 in the 2018-19 season. In 33 minutes of action against GCC, Monroe was 19-of-27 from the field, grabbed eight boards, dished out five assists and had two steals. In the two games combined, Monroe grabbed 16 boards and accumulated three steals in addition to her 67 points scored. Rainy River will face Mesabi Range College on Tuesday, November 20.

Notable Performances Around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference:
Vermilion Community College dropped a pair of close contests in their home tournament to open 2018-19, but Zarea Richards had 19 points in both outings for VCC. In a game against Gogebic, she also had four steals and three assists. Combined in the two contests, she grabbed ten boards and accumulated nine helpers. Daysha Davis chipped in 24 points over the two games for the Ironwomen.
Mesabi Range College was paced by Hailey Aho with 16 points in their only game of the week against Gogebic; she also had nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Teammate Makenzey Goerdt grabbed eight rebounds for the Norse.
Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College saw Meredith Cherne score 11 points and grab eight rebounds in a season-opening game against Lake Superior College. The Thunder cause was helped by Aleisha Fox and Kelsey Warner who both grabbed six rebounds on the day.
Ridgewater College had just one contest this past week, falling to the JV team of Mayville State, 93-57. Taylor Rose scored 31 points and had ten rebounds to pace the Warriors, while Kendra Miller had four steals and four assists. Catherine Vogt was 4-of-6 from the foul line for Ridgewater.
Lake Superior College notched the first win in program history, defeating FDLTCC 76-27. Carly Hansen led her team and all scorers with 15 points, while Malea Boser was the top rebounder with eight overall. The Icehawks were strong defensively, as Kyndra Beavers and Baylee Barningham both grabbed four steals and Morgan Schlee blocked three shots. In it's first-ever contest, LSC lost to Hibbing, with Kyndra Beavers scoring nine points and collecting seven rebounds.
Itasca Community College split a pair of games to open up the 2018-19 campaign, losing to Rainy River 88-73 but defeating Vermilion, 65-61. Averi Holthusen averaged 21.5 points a contest for the Vikings and hauled in 18 rebounds over the course of the weekend. Kenzi Reidel grabbed 12 boards against VCC and was 6-of-9 shooting in the contest for ICC. Emily Franz had ten boards and 13 points against Vermilion.
Northland Community & Technical College started off 2018-19 with a 68-47 win over the JV team of Jamestown College. Carly Mekash came of the bench to score 16 for the Pioneers, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Teammate Jozi Halvorson had 13 points, while Hannah Dietsch dished out five assists, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals. Brooke Heggie led all players in the contest with 13 rebounds.
Western Technical College went 1-1 over the past week, beating the JV team of Luther College 68-55 and falling to NJCAA Division II opponent Bay (MI) College, 78-62. Lexy Schroeder had 25 points between the two games and Rylee Gabel was strong on the boards for the Cavaliers, grabbing 21 rebounds. She also blocked three shots against Bay and one more in the win over Luther.
St. Cloud Technical & Community College fell to 0-3 with a 75-61 loss to the JV team at Concordia-Moorhead.
Central Lakes College picked up a win on the road at Minnesota State-Fergus Falls, defeating the Spartans 79-52. Maggie Fellerman came off the bench to score 14 points, while Naiomi Lane recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 12 points in the effort. Eleven different Raiders scored in the contest as CLC improved their record to 2-0 on the year.
Anoka-Ramsey traveled to Chicago this past weekend, beating College of DuPage 78-43 and losing to Joliet Junior College, 83-78. Mikayla Homola tallied 48 points total for the weekend and collected 14 total steals across the two games. Charo Nickens had 12 rebounds against JJC and Adaya Sandifer dished out eight assists to lead the Golden Rams in that category. Jonna Warren was impressive off the bench for ARCC against COD, leading all scorers with 14 points on the night.
Minnesota West CTC took the court to playing a pair of games against NJCAA Division II Iowa Lakes Community College and Southwestern Community College. Southern Division Player-of-the-Week Emily Shaffer lead MnWest to a 1-1 record against their neighbors to the south, grabbing 19 boards and scoring 33 points. Haley Unke chipped in 12 points against Southwestern and fellow LadyJay Avery Van Roekel had 13 rebounds. In the loss to ILCC, Emily Schroer dished out four assists, had a steal and grabed six rebounds.
Rainy River Community College was led by Northern Division Player-of-the-Week Daeja Monroe who racked up 67 points across two RRCC wins. Perrisha Cox had 26 points against Gogebic and has seven steals in the game. Taquiana Gant blocked seven shots against Itasca Community College and hauled in nine rebounds against the Vikings. Davane Gross led Rainy River in assists with 15 total for the weekend.
Hibbing Community College won big in their only game of the week, downing Lake Superior 96-34. Klaryssa Whelan was the top scorer on the night with 22 points, while Bethany Baldwin chipped in 19 points and Sherae' Cherenfant added 17 points and seven steals in the contest. Alexis Desjarlait added nine rebounds to the Cardinal effort and scored 14 points; she also had two steals.
M State-Fergus Falls saw Sydney Hovland score 27 points in a pair of set-backs this past week, while fellow Spartan Megan Dreger scored 12 and ten points in each of the two contests. Dreger also had seven steals against Central Lakes and Kassandra Algarate dished out five assists to her teammates against NDSCS.
Rochester CTC was idle this past week.
