The first of two weekends of basketball featuring competition between the Northern and Southern Divisions in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference has produced two Player-of-the-Week awards and several notable performances from around the MCAC.

Sydney Hovland Fr. / Forward Underwood, MN

Sydney Hovland (Underwood, MN) led M State Fergus Falls to a 2-1 record against MCAC competition last week. Playing for a total of 120 minutes, she racked up 77 points and 18 boards for the Spartans. In addition, the freshman forward had eight assists, four blocks and a steal. From the charity stripe, Hovland was 23-of-26 for the week. The Spartans and Hovland will travel to Thief River Falls and Grand Rapids this weekend to take on Northland and Itasca in the MCAC Crossover.

Alexis Desjarlait Fr. / Forward Red Lake, MN
|
Alexis Desjarlait, a freshman forward at Hibbing Community College from Red Lake, Minnesota was a key performer in the Cardinal unbeaten week. Desjarlait tallied 49 points for the week and grabbed 24 rebounds across wins over Mesabi Range (90-60), Ridgewater (86-71) and Minnesota West (78-69). She was 20-of-38 from the field and had six steals and a pair of blocks over the week. Hibbing is 6-0 so far in the 2018 regular season. Hibbing and Desjarlait will host Rochester CTC and Western Tech in the next weekend of MCAC Crossover play this Friday and Saturday.

Notable Performances Around the MCAC:
Anoka-Ramsey Community College: The ARCC Golden Rams picked up two wins in Crossover action and were led by Charo Nickens and Mikayla Homola in their win over the Thunder. Maleigha Singleton-Buchanan grabbed a game-high 6 rebounds and chipped in 12 points. Homola also had 36 points against Central Lakes on Saturday, while Adaya Sandifer had a 10-point / six assist night in a victory over the Raiders.
Central Lakes College: The Raiders went 1-1 over the weekend and were paced by Maggie Fellerman who had 18 points against Anoka-Ramsey and Naomi Lane scored 13 while grabbing nine boards in the contest. Fellerman also hit for 12 points against Gogebic while coming off the bench; she grabbed five boards and dished out three helpers as well. Naomi Lane hit the double-double mark against GCC with ten rebounds and ten points, as well as four steals.
Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College: The Thunder saw Meredith Cherne score 11 points at Anoka-Ramsey on Friday night, while also grabbing eight boards in the game. Aleisha Fox also had six board against the Golden Rams.
Hibbing Community College: Northern Division POW Alexis Desjarlait reached the double-digit point mark in all three Cardinal contests this week, including a weekly high of 25 against Minnesota West. Against Mesabi Range College, Hannah Morris scored 16 and Sherae' Cherenfant netted 18. Bethany Baldwin had 20 points off the bench. Cherenfant also had 16 points, four steals, five rebounds and three assists in the key win over the LadyJays. Shauna Kavajecz and Klaryssa Whelan both had 15 points vs. Ridgewater.
Itasca Community College: The Vikings fell to Western Tech and Rochester, but Averi Holthusen had 18 points against RCTC and Kenzi Reidel grabbed 14 rebounds against the Yellowjackets. In the WTC game, Holthusen led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds. Maya Schroeder had 15 Viking rebounds in the contest while Kristine Johnson dished out five assists.
Lake Superior College: The Icehawks dropped a contest 77-60 to Gogebic over the weekend; Kyndra Beavers led the way with 20 points while Bailey Wheeler and Baylee Barningham both had 14 on the night. Beavers also hauled in 13 rebounds and had eight assists, just two shy of a triple-double.
Mesabi Range College: The Norse saw Patty Overbye notch 12 points and dish three assist off the bench against SCTCC; Makenzey Goerdt had another 12 boards and ten points in the game. Haley Hansen also reached double-digits in rebounds with 10 against the Cyclones. In the Norse contest vs. M State-Fergus Falls, Makenzey Goerdt led MRC with 17.
M State-Fergus Falls: The Spartans picked up two wins last week, beating both Vermilion and Mesabi Range in Fergus Falls. Southern Division Player-of-the-Week Sydney Hovland scored 57 points over that stretch, while teammate Taylin Schleicher produced a double-double in both games - 18 point/11 rebound, 20 point/10 rebound efforts. Ashlee Rimpla also chipped in seven boards vs. the Norse.
Minnesota West CTC: The LadyJays fell in both Crossover contests last week but Avery Van Roekel was 13-of-16 from the foul line en route to 19 points against Rainy River. Vs. Hibbing, Emily Schroer led MnWest with 16 points and Emily Shaffer grabbed an impressive 17 rebounds. M'Kayla Mike dished out five assists and had three steals against the Cardinals.
Northland Community & Technical College: The Pioneers claimed a pair of MCAC wins in games on the road last week, led by Brooke Heggie in the paint. Heggie had 18 rebounds against Western Tech and another 9 against Rochester. She also blocked six Yellowjacket shots. Carly Mekash scored 20 points against RCTC and tracked down 18 rebounds as well. Mekash had 16 vs. Western Tech, including going 6-of-7 from the foul line. Janie Wunderlich had five assists, five boards and eight points for the Pioneers against WTC.
Rainy River Community College: The Voyageurs improved to 7-0 overall last week, beating both MnWest and Ridgewater. Daeja Monroe had 45 points over the two games, along with 16 rebounds. Perrisha Cox added 17 points for the RRCC effort in Worthington, along with four steals vs. the BlueJays. Davane Gross had 12 assists to go with six rebounds and four steals as well against Ridgewater.
Ridgewater College: The Warriors dropped their opening Crossover contests to Hibbing and Rainy River, but Morgan Swenson came off the bench to score 20 points and grab 15 rebounds against Hibbing. Taylor Rose added 14 in the game. Against Rainy River, Rose led the Warriors with 25 points and nine rebounds, Morgan Gronli had 19 points and eight boards. Kendra Kuczek had 13 points vs. Hibbing.
Rochester Community & Technical College: The Yellowjackets split last week with a loss to Northland and victory over Itasca. Grace Riley had 15 points and eight boards vs. Itasca and Alyssa Whitson added 10 points. Riley also hit for 10 points against NCTC
St. Cloud Technical & Community College: The Cyclones picked up their first win of the season behind a strong effort from Kiara Coops, who had 19 points and 19 rebounds, along with three steals against Vermilion. SCTCC saw Shania Nahring tally 22 points in the win and Rachel Vreeland had 20. Against Mesabi Range, Abbie Wuertz led SCTCC with 19 points.
Vermilion Community College: Bailey Bassette paced Vermilion against M State-Fergus Falls and SCTCC with 38 points in two games. Curtis Bell grabbed 16 total boards in VCC's two games. Terri Sutton had sixteen total rebounds for the weekend and scored 11 points against the Spartans. Bassette had 16 boards in the contest at Fergus Falls.
Western Technical College: Krysten Lawver had 14 points and six boards for WTC, while Rylee Gabel had a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds vs. Itasca. Lexy Schroeder added 11 points to the Cavalier effort against ICC, as did Gabel. Lindsey Murphy added three steals, four assists and six boards on the day.
