MCAC WBB Players-of-the-Week, Notable Performances

The second and final Crossover weekend of basketball between the Northern and Southern Division in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference is complete and included several impressive individual performances.   Read on for the MCAC Women's Basketball Players-of-the-Week as well as the best of the rest of the top efforts around the Conference.

MCAC Northern Division

Northland Pioneer center  Brooke Heggie was a key part of a pair of Crossover wins for her team this past weekend.

The sophomore tallied 51 points across contests against M State-Fergus Falls and St. Cloud Technical & Community College; Northland dealt the Spartans a 75-50 setback and defeated SCTCC 60-33. 

Heggie also had 27 rebounds in weekend play for Northland, dished out seven assists and collected four steals.  She had nine blocked shots, with six of those coming against M State.  The Alexandria, Minnesota product was 15-of-17 from the foul line and was 18-of-33 from the field in the two games. 

The top-ranked Pioneers and Heggie will next take the court on Friday, December 14 when they open up MCAC Northern Division play against Vermilion Community College.  Tipoff is set for 5:30pm. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                                

 

MCAC Southern Division

Emily Shaffer

Worthington, MN

Emily Shaffer, a freshman forward at Minnesota West CTC, had two strong performances in a sweep of LadyJay opponents this past weekend. 

The Worthington, Minnesota product had 30 points and 11 rebounds in a 72-65 MnWest win over Central Lakes College; she also had two blocks in the game.  The following day, Shaffer hit her second double-double with 15 points and 12 boards against FDLTCC, a 107-25 win for the LadyJays. She also collected four steals against the Thunder. 

Minnesota West will take on Little Priest Tribal College on Wednesday, December 12 in their last game of 2018.  Tipoff is set for 5:30pm. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Notable Performances from Around the MCAC:

WESTERN TECHNICAL COLLEGE: Western Tech upset Rainy River 86-76 on Friday to deal the Voyageurs their first loss and fell on Saturday to Hibbing, 77-56.  In both Cavalier contests, WTC saw Kerrigan Lyga score 33 total points and haul in 12 rebounds.  She added a block and an assist across the games, while teammate Rylee Gabel had a two-game total of 15 points and 14 rebounds, along with a pair of steals, two assists and a block.  

VERMILION COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Vermilion had only one contest this past weekend and were led by Daysha Davis with 26 points and five rebounds. VCC teammate Terri Sutton hit for 17 points and nine boards, while also dishing out four assists and picking up three steals. 

ST. CLOUD TECHNICAL & COMMUNITY COLLEGE:  The Cyclones went 1-1 to close out Crossover play, beating ICC 60-59 and falling to Northland 60-33.  Against Itasca, Abbie Wuertz scored 26 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.  Kiara Coops also had 11 boards against ICC and chipped in 17 points along with three blocked shots.  Coops leads the MCAC in rebounds per game at 13.3. 

ROCHESTER COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE: The Yellowjackets dropped both Crossover contests on the road but saw Abby Bauer score 23 points over the games.  Bauer also had 18 rebounds on the weekend, including 13 against RRCC.  Alyssa Whitson had 10 points and seven rebounds vs. Rainy River, while Olivia Matti had 21 points for RCTC.

RIDGEWATER COLLEGE: Taylor Rose led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend on the road with 46 points over two games. Rose also had 13 total rebounds, added two assists and collected both a block and a steal. Morgan Gronli scored 32 points between the two contests as well as having six assists and collecting nine total boards.  Sarah Frederick led Ridgewater with seven rebounds against CLC. 

RAINY RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE: The Voyageurs dropped their first game of 2018-19 to Western, but rebounded to beat RCTC the following day.  Daeja Monroe had 27 points against WTC and added another 27 against Rochester. Perrisha Cox scored 35 points over the two contests, while Jeri Richard grabbed six steals vs. RCTC.  Taquiana Gant had 12 boards against the Yellowjackets and 12 against WTC, for a two-game total of 24 boards on the weekend. 

NORTHLAND COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE: Northern Division POW Brooke Heggie had 51 points and 27 rebounds in leading the Pioneers to a pair of Crossover wins. Carly Mekash also had a strong weekend for Northland, with two-game point totals of 31 points and 18 rebounds, including a team-high 11 boards against SCTCC.  Ashley Moe came off the bench for the Pioneers in both games to tally 18 points. 

MINNESOTA WEST COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE: Southern Division Player-of-the-Week Emily Shaffer had 45 points for the LadyJays in two MnWest wins.  M'Kayla Mike had five assists and five steals against the Thunder and was 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.  Lexie Ramsey led Minnesota West with 22 against the Thunder; Avery Van Roekel had 28 total points in the two wins. 

M STATE-FERGUS FALLS: The Spartans went 1-1 in their final Crossover games and were led by Sydney Hovland with 39 points total in the two contests. She was 9-of-10 from the foul line against ICC.  Alexa Mortenson grabbed 12 rebounds against Northland and had another seven vs. ICC for a two-game tally of 19 rebounds. All five Spartan staters hit for double-digit points in the MSFF 70-67 win over Itasca.

MESABI RANGE COLLEGE: Patty Overbye scored 21 points over two contests for the Norse, while Haley Hansen was a strong presence on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds against Anoka-Ramsey and another 16 vs. Gogebic, for a two-game total of 28.  Shawna Wiese hit for 11 points in each of the Mesabi Range contests, while Tori Johnson had 15 points vs. the Golden Rams. 

LAKE SUPERIOR COLLEGE:  Kyndra Beavers had 34 points for the IceHawks in a pair of losses last week while also grabbing 14 boards and handing out six assists.  Teammate Baylee Barningham accounted for 25 points for Lake Superior.   Carly Hansen hit for double-digits in scoring for both games, tallying 10 points and 14 points, respectively. 

ITASCA COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Averi Holthusen had a big weekend for the Vikings, scoring 24 points against SCTCC and another 28 in the ICC game against M State, for a two-game total of 52.  She also grabbed 21 total rebounds.  Kenzi Reidel had 18 points over the two games and Emily Franz averaged 7.5 points and six boards. 

HIBBING COMMUNITY COLLEGE: The Cardinals went 2-0 to remain undefeated on the year behind the scoring of Alexis Desjarlait who had 46 points total in wins over RCTC and Western Tech.  Desjarlait also averaged 12.5 rebounds for HCC.  Bethany Baldwin scored 17 on Rochester and another 15 vs. the Cavaliers for a two-game total of 27.  Klaryssa Whelan came off the bench to hit for 19 points and average eight rebounds a game. 

FOND DU LAC TRIBAL & COMMUNITY COLLEGE: FDLTCC fell to Gogebic and Minnesota West over the weekend.  Against MnWest, the Thunder were led by Kenzie Niedzielski with eight points and five rebounds while Aleisha Fox had six rebounds and two steals. 

CENTRAL LAKES COLLEGE: The Raiders split their Crossover contests and Paige Wallevand came off the bench in both games to score 16 against Ridgewater and eight on MnWest.  Liz Anderson had a game-high 22 against the LadyJays and Naomi Lane hit a double-double in the CLC game against Ridgewater, with 15 points and 11 boards.  Maggie Fellerman had 12 points and five boards vs. Minnesota West. 

ANOKA-RAMSEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE: The Golden Rams moved their record to 8-2 on the year with a pair of Crossover wins.  Mikayla Homola scored 38 points total in the two games while Charo Nickens had 36.  Nickens also grabbed 10 boards over the weekend.  Nana Montgomery was strong off the bench, with 22 points scored and seven total assists.  Chyanne Nickens hit for 24 points for Anoka-Ramesey on the weekend.
