Women's basketball teams from around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference returned to the courts this past week for the second half of their 2018-19 seasons. A pair of student-athletes stood out from among their peers and have been named Player-of-the-Week in the Northern and Southern Divisions for their efforts.

Northland standout Carly Mekash was a key part of a 2-1 Pioneer mark against NJCAA Division II programs this past week and has earned the MCAC Northern Division Player-of-the-Week award for her efforts. Mekash had 65 points over the course of the week while also hauling in 29 rebounds. Game highlights for the freshman forward from Greenbush, Minnesota included a 34 point game against Dakota College-Bottineau and a 15 rebound outing on the road against Lake Region State. Against Dakota-Bottineau, Mekash was a perfect 5-for-5 from behing the three-point arc. Mekash and the Pioneers will return to MCAC Northern Division action when they take on Central Lakes College at home in Thief River Falls on Wednesday, January 9. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.

Mikayla Homola scored 70 total points in a pair of wins for Anoka-Ramsey Community College and has earned the MCAC Southern Division Player-of-the-Week award for her high scoring efforts. Homola was unstoppable in a key match-up against Northern Division front-runner Hibbing Community College, as the sophomore from Blaine scored 40 points, hauled in four rebounds and had two steals and two assists. The Golden Rams also beat the JV of St. Catherine's at home; Homola notched 10 steals, scored 30 points and dished out six assists to Golden Ram teammates. Anoka-Ramsey and Homola will begin their Southern Division slate this Wednesday when they take on St. Cloud Technical & Community College at 5:45pm in St. Cloud.

Notable Performances from Around the MCAC:
St. Cloud Technical & Community College: The Cyclones split their weekend at 1-1, beating Mesabi Range 59-45 and losing to Itasca, 68-58. Abbie Wuertz collected 32 points in the two contests, and Kiara Coops averaged 10.5 boards across both games. Maria Stokes had 12 rebounds in the SCTCC win over Mesabi Range. Rochester Community & Technical College: The Yellowjackets dropped a pair of games to open up 2019, 68-62 against St. Kate's JV team and 81-66 to Hibbing. Olivia Matti scored 23 points on Hibbing, while Alyssa Whitson had 19 vs. St. Kate's. Whitson had 14 total boards as well. Grace Riley had five assists and 19 points for RCTC vs. Hibbing. Hibbing Community College: The nationally-ranked Cardinals went 1-1 to start 2019, falling to ARCC 91-80 and beating Rochester CTC, 81-66. Bethany Baldwin and Alexis Desjarlait scored 42 and 37 points respectively in the two games. Sherae' Cherenfant had 12 points off the bench against RCTC and Klaryssa Whelan scored 13 as a substitute vs. ARCC, including a 5-for-5 free throw mark. The Cardinals improved to 12-1 overall on the year. Itasca Community College: The Vikings went 1-1 in weekend action, beating SCTCC 68-58 and falling to M State-Fergus Falls, 68-52. Gianna Roberts had 45 total points, including a 28-point outburst vs. the Cyclones. Kenzi Reidel added 12 points to the ICC effort on Friday night and Averi Holthusen came off the bench to score 11 and grab 7 rebounds. Holthusen had a double-double on Saturday as a substitute, scoring 14 and hauling in ten rebounds. Vermilion Community College: VCC fell to Ridgewater, 58-49 and MnWest, 79-52 at the CLC Classic over the weekend. Zarea Richards scored 18 in the Ridgewater contest while teammate Bailey Bassette had 22 against the LadyJays. Terri Sutton averaged a double-double with 22 points and 20 boards across the two games. Maggie Isbell hauled in nine boards and collected three steals vs. Ridgewater for Vermilion. Minnesota West CTC: MnWest was led by Emily Shaffer in a pair of wins, as she scored 38 total points and hauled in 15 rebounds. Shaffer five steals on the weekend. Avery Van Roekel poured in 32 points and Emily Schroer had 26 total. The LadyJays defeated Central Lakes 73-63 and Vermilion 79-52. Lexie Ramsey led her squad in total minutes at 73, scoring 29 across the two games. Anoka-Ramsey Community College: The Golden Rams improved their record to 11-3 with a pair of wins, including a 91-80 victory over MCAC foe Hibbing. Mikayla Homola was unstoppable on the weekend, scoring 40 against the Cardinals and 30 on St. Catherine's JV team. She also had 12 steals, with 10 against St. Kate's. Charo Nickens scored 19 and 14 points respectively, and Adaya Sandifer had a double-double against HCC with 10 assists and 18 points. Central Lakes College: The Raiders went 1-1 overall on the weekend, losing to MnWest 73-63 and beating Ridgewater, 103-54. Paige Wallevand had a pair of strong outings, scoring 36 points and hauling in 16 boards between the two match-ups. Teammate Kelsie Weite averaged 12 rebounds per game and dished out seven assists. In the win over the Warriors, Maggie Fellerman came off the bench to score 15 and notch six assists. Northland Community & Technical College: The Pioneers played thee games against NJCAA Division II competition this past week, falling on the road at Lake Region State but defeating Gogebic Community College 75-51 and Dakota College-Bottineau, 69-45 in the NCTC Classic. Northern Division Player-of-the-Week Carly Mekash had a strong return to action for Northland, scoring 65 total points, grabbing 29 rebounds. Against DCB, Mekash was 5-for-5 on three-pointers. Brooke Heggie had a team-high 16 rebounds against LRSC and led NCTC in scoring against GCC with 21 points. Janie Wunderlich collected 20 assists over the three contests. Ridgewater College: The Warriors went 1-1 to open 2019, beating Vermilion 58-49 and losing to Central Lakes, 103-54. Taylor Rose scored 45 points total for Ridgewater, including 25 against CLC. She also collected 17 boards. Sarah Frederick had a 12 point-12 rebound effort against Vermilion while Kendra Miller had 11 points, seven boards and three helpers against the Raiders. Mesabi Range College: The Norse fell twice over the past weekend, losing to M State-Fergus Falls 82-67 and SCTCC, 93-80. Patty Overbye scored 14 points and Makenzey Goerdt notched 13 points and 10 rebounds against the Spartans. Shawna Wiese led MRC with 11 points against SCTCC and Hailey Aho hit double-double territory with a 10 point and 10 rebound night against the Cyclones. M State-Fergus Falls: The Spartans improved to 6-7 overall with two victories last weekend over Mesabi Range and Itasca. Sydney Hovland scored 14 vs. MRC and 17 vs. ICC while Kassandra Algarate had 14 boards and six steals between the two contests for MSFF. Taylin Schleicher poured in 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting against the Norse.
