Women's basketball programs across the Minnesota College Athletic Conference are off to a strong start in 2019 as three teams and one student-athlete were noted by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their recent performances on the hardwood.
Individually, Northland's Carly Mekash was tabbed as the NJCAA Division III Player-of-the-Week for the week ending January 6 in a crowded field of great performances. Mekash brought a balanced game to the court in three match-ups against Division II programs, leading her team in both scoring and rebounding across different contests to open 2019. Mekash and Northland will return to MCAC Northern Division action with a home game vs. Central Lakes College on Wednesday, January 9 at 5:30pm.
Northland Community & Technical College, Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Hibbing Community College are all found in the current NJCAA Top 10 poll, available by clicking here. The Pioneers - fresh off of coach Shannon Nelson's 200th career victory on December 15 - are found in the No. 3 spot after a 2-1 week against NJCAA Division II programs. The ARCC Golden Rams, led by high-scoring Mikayla Homola, are listed as No. 7 in the poll and the MCAC Northern Division power Hibbing is at No. 8 with a 12-1 mark heading into the main part of the Conference schedule with Cardinals Bethany Baldwin and Alexis Desjarlait each averaging approximately 18 points a game.
