The 2018-19 women's basketball season concluded today with the Hibbing Community College Cardinals claiming a 83-71 win over Passiac County Community College in the fifth-place game of the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championships. The Cardinals connected on 12 of their 27 three-point attempts and led the game from the opening bucket. Shauna Kavajecz paced HCC with 20 points, six assists and 11 rebounds while Sherae' Cherenfant added 15. Teammates Hannah Morris and Alexis Desjarlait each had 14 points; Klaryssa Whelan added 11 points and nine boards.
With the victory, Hibbing lays claim to one of the best runs in program history, finishing at 29-3 overall; the Cardinals were 15-1 in MCAC Northern Division action. Along the way HCC claimed two wins over NJCAA Division II programs - Bay (MI) College and Gogebic Community College - and the Cardinals reached or exceeded the 100 point mark on seven occasions. At the National tournament HCC finished 2-1 overall, rebounding from a quarterfinal loss to MCAC Southern Division side Western Technical College to beat both Anne Arundel Community College and Passiac County to claim the fifth-place hardware.
As a team for the season, Hibbing averaged nearly 90 points a game (89.9) and was dominant on the boards at 45.5 rebounds a contest. Home court was particuarly kind to HCC as they racked up a 15-0 mark in Hibbing, including a pair of wins in the NJCAA Region XIIIB tournament to send them onto the national stage.
MCAC Northern Division Coach-of-the-Year Kate Brau's squad will say goodbye to several standout sophomores as Stacie Lokken, Sherae' Cherenfant, Hannah Morris and Shauna Kavajecz all conclude their Cardinal careers. Hibbing had several players tabbed for All-Division, All-State and related accolades during their regular season and post-season schedule. The NJCAA All-America selections are made by the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Committee and will be named in early April; be sure to follow @NJCAABasketball for the most up-to-date information on final end-of-season honors.
