The volleyball season in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference continues to climb towards the post-season, as both Divisional leaders maintain perfect marks in the Northern and Southern ranks while several schools enjoyed strong showings over the past week in MCAC action. A handful of volleyball student-athletes rose above the rest with stellar individual performances over the past several days and have earned Player-of-the-Week honors in their respective roles for their efforts.
MCAC South, Hitter of the Week:
Ashley Froelich, a volleyball student-athlete at Ridgewater College in Wilmar, Minnesota, has earned Week 5 Hitter-of-the-Week honors in the Southern Division. Froelich, a sophomore, had 29 kills, which translates to a 3.22 kills-per-set as the Warriors put together a 3-0 week. The 6'0" RS from Paynesville, had attack efficiencies of .611 against Western Technical College and .917 against RCTC. Froelich and her RC teammates are 6-1 in Divisional play and 13-3 overall. Ridgewater carries a 3 match winning streak into their important midweek match against M State on Wednesday, September 27th.
MCAC South, Defensive Player of the Week:
St. Cloud Technical & Community College student-athlete Chelsea Schroeder has been an important part of the Cylcones strong showing in September. As a sophomore in the Conference, the Coldspring, Minnesota native racked up 36 digs and 5 service aces over the past week. Schroeder, a libero who competed at ROCORI high school, sparked SCTCC to a 2-0 week in MCAC play, including a 3-0 shutout of Anoka-Ramsey and a tightly contested 3-2 battle against M State. Coach Heidi Smith's Cyclones remain the only unbeaten Southern squad and will put their 6-0 divisional mark on the line as they head into a mid-week match against Rochester CTC for a key contest at 6:30pm this Wednesday, September 27th in St. Cloud.
MCAC South, Setter of the Week:
Sheyenne Gunderson picks up the Week 5 Setter-of-the-Week award in the Southern Division, helping lead the M State Spartans in a win over Western Technical College and taking both RCTC and St. Cloud Technical & Community College to 5 game matches over the past week. Gunderson, from Barnesville, Minnesota, is a freshman setter for head coach Abby Crowser and totaled 114 assists over the course of MCAC Northern Division action between September 19-24. M State will look to bring their best effort in their MCAC North contest when they travel to Ridgewater College on Wednesday, September 27th for a 6:30pm match.
MCAC North, All-Around Player-of-the-Week:
Rochester Community & Technical College outside hitter Tara Rogers takes home All-Around Player-of-the-Week honors for Week 5 in the Southern Division. Rogers, a sophomore from Stewartville, Minnesota, produced 27 kills, 31 digs and 5 service aces over the past week for the Yellowjackets. RCTC went .500 in MCAC South play, dropping a 3-0 decision to Ridgewater College and defeating M State in a five game 3-2 road victory. Rogers and her Rochester CTC teammates will take on Division-leading SCTCC in a road match on Wednesday, September 27th in St. Cloud.
