Rainy River, Western Tech Student-Athletes Earn First POW Honors

A handful of women's basketball programs in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference opened up their 2018-19 season this past week and a couple of student-athletes stood out above their peers to claim the opening Player-of-the-Week honors.

Daeja Monroe

Houston, TX

Rainy River Community College forward Daeja Monroe looked to be in mid-season form as her team traveled north of the border to open up the 2018-19 Voyageur campaign. 

Playing in a pair of games against Providence College located in Alberta, Canada, Monroe lead RRCC to two wins, a 106-67 triumph and a 86-65 win on November 3 and 4.  The Houston, Texas product averaged 35.5 points per game, grabbed four rebounds in each contest and had four steals per game.  

In 75 minutes of action between the two games, Monroe was 27-of-46 on field goals, including a 9-of-22 performance on three points.  She hit 8 of her eleven free-throws for RRCC. 

The Voyageurs are back in action on Saturday, November 17 when they play Gogebic Community College in Ely, Minnesota.

                   Caitlin Young

Caitlin Young came off the bench to lead all scorers with 22 points in Western Technical College's season opening win over UW-Richland on Thursday, November 1. 

Young was 7-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-10 shooting from behind the arc.  She also was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe and hauled down three rebounds. She dished out a pair of assists in the contest and had a steal against UW-R. 

Western Tech and Young will play next on Wednesday, November 7 against UW-Washington.
