MCAC Volleyball Weekend Notes & Highlights

Ten teams from across the Minnesota College Athletic Conference traveled to St. Cloud for the MCAC Crossover Tournament, hosted by St. Cloud Technical & Community College at the Whitney Center over the weekend. The season-opening tournament gave fans, families and followers a first look at much of the MCAC Volleyball ranks this season. 

M State-Fergus Falls - #9 in the current NJCAA poll -  was one of three teams to go 4-0 on the weekend, including a big, five-set victory over #3 Central Lakes College.  Fourth-ranked Rochester Community & Technical College also was 4-0 on the weekend, downing CLC 3-0, as well as sweeping Northland, Mesabi Range and Hibbing.  Minnesota West CTC made a statement with a 4-0 weekend; first-year head coach Brittney McNabb saw her squad take a 3-2 win over Mesabi Range and then went on to sweep NCTC, Rainy River and Hibbing.

Overall, MCAC volleyball teams fared as follows:

Minnesota West CTC, 4-0 Overall: Defeated Mesabi Range (3-2) and swept Hibbing, Rainy River and Northland.

#4 Rochester Community & Technical College, 4-0 Overall. Defeated Hibbing, #3 Central Lakes, Mesabi Range College and Northland, all 3-0 sweeps.

#9 Minnesota State-Fergus Falls, 4-0 Overall. Defeated #3 Central Lakes (3-2) and Hibbing, Mesabi Range and Rainy River, all by 3-0 scorelines.

Central Lakes College, 2-2 Overall: Defeated Ridgewater (3-0) and SCTCC (3-2), fell to #4 RCTC (3-0) and #9 MSFF (3-2). 

Mesabi Range College, 1-3: Beat Ridgewater (3-1); lost to MnWest (3-2), #4 RCTC (3-0) and #9 Minnesota State-Fergus Falls.

Host St. Cloud Technical & Community College 3-1 Overall. Wins over Northland, Rainy River and Hibbing, all by a 3-0 set score.  The Cyclones fell to #3 Central Lakes in a 3-2 final match of the tournament.

Ridgewater College, 2-2 Overall. First-year head coach Erica Smith notched wins over Northland and Rainy River – both 3-0 sweeps – while falling to Mesabi Range College (3-1) and #3 Central Lakes College (3-0).

Hibbing Community College, 0-4 Overall:  Fell to #4 RCTC, #9 M State-Fergus falls, SCTCC and MnWest.

Rainy River Community College, 0-4 Overall; Lost to #9 M State-Fergus, SCTCC, Minnesota West and Ridgewater College.

Northland Community & Technical College, 0-4 Overall: Fell to SCTCC, MnWest, Ridgewater and #4 RCTC.

Additionally, Anoka-Ramsey Community College will competed in scrimmages against Macalester College and Dakota County Technical College in exhibition action last Saturday under new head coach Brandon Bader. 

Riverland Community College, Itasca Community College, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, Western Technical College and Vermilion Community College were all idle this past weekend.

MCAC Volleyball fans will get their first look at Century College this upcoming week, as the Wood Ducks travel to Itasca Community College on Wednesday, August 28th. Century is fielding varsity volleyball for the first time in 2019 and will be a part of the MCAC Southern Division schedule in 2020.
