Winona, MN-

Minnesota State Community & Technical College volleyball student-athlete Sydney Hovland hit a milestone mark in her Spartan volleyball career on Wednesday night; the Underwood, Minnesota sophomore registered her 1,000 set assist in a M State-Fergus Falls win over Ridgewater College.

Hovland tallied 30 helpers in the 3-1 win which kept head coach Abby Crowser's squad unbeaten at 9-0 this season.  The Spartans were ranked #4 in the latest NJCAA Division III Volleyball poll and their stock will likely rise with the continued winning streak.  The Spartans are off this upcoming weekend and will likely be preparing for their Wednesday, September 11 showdown with #9 St. Cloud Technical & Community College

Hovland's 1,000 set assist mark is even more impressive when one considers her two-sport status; along with running the attack for M State volleyball, she is a member of the Spartan women's basketball program. As an MCAC All-State and All-Division basketball athlete as a freshman, she averaged 17.4 points and almost six rebounds a game at forward. She appeared in 25 contests, starting all 25. Hovland logged 34.4 minutes per game for coach Janice Hendrickson.

In volleyball this fall, Hovland is averaging 8.06 helpers a match, good for second place currently.  With her at the helm, M State has earned 3-0 sweeps in five of their nine wins- only traditional power Central Lakes College has stretched the Spartans to five sets in a 3-2 M State win at the MCAC Crossover Tournament.
