Winona, MN-

Former WNBA basketball player Tamara Moore was announced on Twitter as the new men's basketball and women's softball coach at Mesabi Range College, as announced earlier this week.

Current Nassau Community College athletic director Kerri-Ann McTiernan was the first woman to lead a National Junior College Athletic Assocation (NJCAA) men's basketball program, serving as head coach of Kingborough Community College and winning a conference championship in the 1999-2000 season.  ESPN reporter Myron Medcalf reports that Moore is the first African-American woman to serve as a head coach a men's collegiate basketball team.  Medcalf's full article is available at this link.

Moore played her college basketball at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 2002; during her career, she finished as the all-time Badger leader in steals and assists.  After college, the former Minneapolis North High School standout played for seven different WNBA teams and a handful of international clubs, beginning with the Miami Sol in 2002 and concluding her pro career with Elitzur Ramla, a professional women's basketball team based in Ramla, Israel.

The Mesabi Range men's basketball team concluded it's 2019-20 campaign with a 6-19 overall record and 5-11 mark in the MCAC Northern Division.  The softball team saw the 2020 NJCAA spring season canceled due to the COVID-19 virus; the 2019 MRC softball squad was 8-22 overall, 8-16 in MCAC North action.
