Fergus Falls, MN -

When the NJCAA announced in the fall of 2020 that they would not be sponsoring division III national championships for winter sports, four Minnesota College Athletic Conference colleges each made a decision to proceed with their women's basketball season anyway.  On Saturday afternoon, that decision paid off for Minnesota State – Fergus Falls when they ended their season with a Region XIII Women's Basketball Championship.

In the championship match-up between the Spartans of Minnesota State – Fergus Falls and the Riverland Blue Devils, Sabrina Fronning put on a performance to be remembered.  The freshman standout from Fergus Falls nearly pulled off a quadruple double.  She finished the game with 14 points, 18 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 steals.  Her dominant performance helped the Spartans defeat Riverland 73-62 to claim the Region XIII Championship. M State – Fergus Falls jumped out to a 9-point lead to start the game and never looked back.  Riverland made a push early in the 4th quarter to cut the lead to six, but a couple of clutch shots halted the comeback attempt. Emily Larson added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jayna Gronewold led the team in scoring 23 points and Kalista Aamot chipped in 10 points of her own.

For Riverland, Cayli Miles led the team in scoring with 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Imani Colon had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Jade Love added 15 points in the losing effort.  The Blue Devils season ends with a 4-9 record.

Minnesota State – Fergus Falls, Riverland, Minnesota West, and Rochester Community and Technical College each played through an MCAC regular season schedule with Rochester Community and Technical College winning the MCAC Championship.  To give themselves an opportunity to play for a national championship, RCTC decided early in the year to compete at the NJCAA Division II level for the post-season which allowed for the Region XIII Division III Championship match-up between Minnesota State – Fergus Falls and Riverland.

The Spartans finish their championship season with a 7-7 record.
