RCTC claims NJCAA DII Region XIII women's basketball title; advances to district championship

Bismarck, ND - The Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) Yellowjackets women's basketball team kept their season-long winning streak alive as they downed host United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) 75-64 to move to 16-0 and secure the NJCAA Division II Region XIII title.  The Yellowjackets' Olivia Christianson scored 32 points en route to the tournament MVP.

RCTC got out of the gates early, taking a 17-8 lead into the break after the first period.  United Tribes, however, would respond in the second as they put up 21 points and cut the Yellowjackets lead to 3 (32-29) at the half.  In the third quarter, it was again the Yellowjackets taking charge as they outscored UTTC 21-14 in the period.  The two teams exchanged buckets through most of the fourth. However, United Tribes was not able to cut into the Yellowjackets lead as RCTC earned a 22-21 edge in the final quarter.

Joining Christianson in double figures for the Yellowjackets were Myia Ruzek with 16 and Kandace Sikkink with 11.  All-tournament team member Ravyn Miles scored 9 points and had 4 assists.

Christianson led the Yellowjacket defense with 8 steals as RCTC forced 18 UTTC turnovers and held United Tribes to only 34% shooting.

The Yellowjackets will hit the road once again for Saturday's Northwest Plains District Championship game.  The Yellowjackets will travel to North Platte, NE to take on the Knights of North Platte Community College.  The Knights (9-11) earned their berth in the district championship game with a 72-55 upset win over Southeast Community College.

Tip-off for the district championship game is at 2:00 PM with the winner advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hickory, NC on April 20-24.
