MCAC Weekly Softball Honors - Week of April 12 - 18

Rochester, MN –

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference has announced the MCAC Softball Pitchers and Players-of-the-Week for the week of April 12 - 18

Anoka-Ramsey Community College's Sunny Strait earned the MCAC South Division Pitcher-of-the-Week award for the third week in a row after pitching a complete game win over St. Cloud Technical and Community College.  Haylee Sawyer, Rochester Community and Technical College's catcher, claimed the MCAC South Division Player-of-the-Week honor following her nice offensive performances last week.

For the north division, Rainy River Community College pitcher, Mariah Leahy, impressed the fans with her 12 innings of action from the circle to earn the MCAC North Division Pitcher-of-the-Week honor; while Central Lakes College's Cassidy Zontelli takes the MCAC North Division Player-of-the-Week award with her well-rounded play at the plate and in the field. 

 

 

 

 

South Division 

Pitcher- and Player-of-the-Week

Sunny Strait

Sophomore / Pitcher

Minnetonka, MN

 

 

Sunny Strait, the Minnetonka, MN sophomore has put together three very strong weeks of action from the pitching circle for the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Golden Rams to secure the MCAC South Division Pitcher-of-the-Week honors.  It is her third straight week to earn the pitcher-of-the-week award.  Strait started one contest last week and appeared in relief in another, pitching 11 innings and striking out 10.  She gave up 4 runs and ended the week with a 2.54 ERA while walking only 3 batters.  Strait also went 3 for 6 at the plate hitting a home run and knocking in 3 RBI.  She currently leads the nation in home runs with 9.  The Golden Rams are now 7-4 on the season and return to the field on Tuesday, April 20 against Minnesota West.

 

 

Haylee Sawyer

2nd year / C

Dodge Center, MN

 

 

Haylee Sawyer, Rochester Community and Technical College's second year catcher from Dodge Center, MN, claims the MCAC South Division Player-of-the-Week award.  Sawyer went 3 for 5 at the plate, slamming a 3-run home run and hitting a double on her way to collecting six RBI and scoring twice herself.  In addition, Sawyer also threw out two players attempting to steal bases.

The Yellowjackets improve their record to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.  They return to action on Friday, April 23 when they take on the Golden Rams of Anoka-Ramsey.

                            

 

North Division 

Pitcher and Player-of-the-Week

Mariah Leahy

Sophomore / Pitcher 

International Falls, MN

Mariah Leahy, sophomore pitcher at Rainy River Community College, picks up her first MCAC North Division Pitcher-of-the-Week award after her two starts last week.  In her 12 innings of action, Leahy had an ERA of 2.33, striking out 10 batters and walking only 2.  The International Falls, MN product also came up big for her team offensively when she doubled and scored two runs for her Voyageurs in the second game of the two-game sweep of Central Lakes College.  Leahy also had 4 put-outs in centerfield after leaving the pitching circle.  Rainy River is now 4-10 overall and 3-1 in the MCAC North, and the teams travels next to Mesabi Range College to compete on Wednesday, April 21.

 

Cassidy Zontelli

Sophomore / SS

Brainerd, MN

 

 

Central Lakes College sophomore shortstop, Cassidy Zontelli takes home the MCAC North Division Player-of-the-Week honor.  In her 26 innings at shortstop, Zontelli played error free ball last week and hit a game tying RBI single in a win over St. Cloud Technical and Community College.  In 18 at-bats, the Brainerd, MN native had 12 hits (1 triple) and walked twice, knocking in 10 RBI and stealing 4 bases on 4 attempts.  She helped lead her team to a 4-9 overall record and 2-2 in divisional play.  The Raiders take the field again at Northland on Wednesday, April 21.
