MCAC Weekly Baseball Honors - Week of May 3 -9

Rochester, MN –

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) office has announced the MCAC Baseball Pitchers and Players-of-the-Week for the week of May 3 - 9

In the MCAC North Division, Itasca Community College's Riley Resnick pitched a complete game 4-hit shutout to earn the pitcher-of-the-week honors, and John Michael Gonzalez Jr. from Rainy River Community College hit .500 over six games with a game-tying grand slam against Anoka-Ramsey to earn the player-of-the-week honors.

Central Lakes College's Jonathan Lerma picks up the MCAC Central Division Pitcher-of-the-Week award after earning two wins on the mound with a combined 1.50 ERA for the week, and teammate Phillip Zynda earns the Central Division Player-of-the-Week honor after securing a hit in each game last week and hitting a go-ahead two run double to get the win over Northland and secure a spot in the Region XIII Baseball Tournament

For the MCAC South Division, Spencer Wright earns the Pitcher-of-the-Week honor after going 2-0 on the bump with a complete game shutout for Century CollegeAnoka-Ramsey Community College's Benji Bruce earns the MCAC South Division Player-of-the-Week honor after hitting a home run and a .421 batting average, while also stealing two bases during the week.

MCAC North Division 

Pitcher & Player of the Week

 

 

Riley Resnick

Fr. / Pitcher

Twin Valley, MN 

 

Riley Resnick, Itasca Community College's strong armed lefty pitcher from Twin Valley, MN threw a complete game shutout against Vermilion Community College to earn the MCAC North Pitcher-of-the-Week honor.  The freshman pitched 7-innings giving up no runs or walks and scattering four hits and striking out four.  Resnick picked up his second win of the season and lifted his team to an 18-19 record and 9-7 in the division.  Itasca will next play North Dakota State College of Science in the Region XIII Tournament on Friday.

 

 

        

John Michael Gonzalez Jr.

Tucson, AZ 

 

Rainy River Community College freshman standout, John Michael Gonzalez Jr., hit .500 on the week and reached base 16 times in 22 plate appearances, scoring 11 times and earns the MCAC North Player-of-the-Week award.  The Tucson, AZ native hit four home runs, one of which was a game-tying grand slam against Anoka-Ramsey, and two doubles on his way to driving in 13 runs.  He also walked three times and was hit by a pitch.  In the field, Gonzalez had 19 putouts on the week.  Rainy River improved to 15-24 on the season and 10-6 in the division.  The Voyageurs take the field again in the Region XIII Tournament on Friday against Rochester Community and Technical College.

 

 

 

 

MCAC Central Division 

Pitcher & Player of the Week

 

Jonathan Lerma

Tucson, AZ 

 

Central Lakes College's Jonathan Lerma picks up the MCAC Central Division Pitcher-of-the-Week award after earning two wins on the mound with a combined 1.50 ERA for the week.  The freshman from Tucson, AZ earned a win as a starting pitcher and got a win in relief.  In his 6 innings of work, Lerma gave up only two runs, one earned, and five hits on his way to striking out 5.  He also walked 4.  The Raiders improve to 13-12 overall and 5-7 in the division and will play Riverland on Friday in the Region XIII Tournament.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Phillip Zynda

Austin, MN

 

Phillip Zynda, Central Lakes College sophomore catcher, had a nice week at the plate, hitting .369 in his 19 opportunities and knocking in a home run.  The Austin, MN product also hit four doubles and drove in 9 RBI while walking twice.  Zynda hit the go ahead two-run double in the bottom of the 6th inning to defeat Northland in the game that secured a spot in the Region XIII Tournament for the Raiders and earn him the MCAC Central Player-of-the-Week honor.  The Raiders will take on Riverland in that tournament on Friday.

 

 

 

MCAC South Division

Pitcher & Player of the Week

Spencer Wright

White Bear Lake, MN 

 

Spencer Wright, the Century College freshman hailing from White Bear Lake, MN, earned the MCAC South Division Pitcher-of-the-Week honor after throwing a complete game 1-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Riverland Community College.  He also earned a victory in a 1-hit game against DCTC earlier in the week.  Wright struck out 18 in his twelve innings of work and gave up only two runs and two hits, while walking only 1, as he picked up his first two wins of the season.  He also hit for himself, going 5 for 7 with a home run and three doubles.  Century ends the regular season at 26-6 and 9-3 in the division and returns to the diamond on Friday in Game 3 of the Region XIII Baseball Tournament.

 

 

 

Benji Bruce

Andover, MN

 

Benji Bruce, the Andover, MN freshman, helped his Anoka-Ramsey Community College team earn a win when he hit his first collegiate home run against Rainy River last week.  Bruce went 8 for 19 with the home run and two extra base hits, driving in 6 RBI and stealing two bases in his two attempts.  He also started on the mound and got the win, going four innings and striking out four.  Anoka-Ramsey concluded their season with a 13-21 overall record and 3-9 in the MCAC South.
