In the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, Week 2 of the football season is in the books and teams are preparing for Week 3, when the Divisional contests start and the hunt for MCAC playoff spots begins. It looks to be competitive and entertaining ride through the fall; both Divisions have had six wins, six losses, and several teams have student-athletes who appear in the national NJCAA football top five statistical categories.
On Wednesday, the NJCAA announced that Rochester Community & Technical College linebacker, Brandon Perce, was named the Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Perce had a hand in 19 tackles for the Yellowjackets in their 24-21 defeat of Dakota College-Bottineau. Over six of Perce's stops occurred behind the line of scrimmage, and he forced a Jacks fumble as well. Perce- from West Allis, Wisconsin - is a sophomore for Rochester and sits second in the nation among two-year college programs in Tackles Per Game, at 16.5 per contest. He is also fourth nationally in Tackles (33) and seventh nationally in solo stops (19).
Earlier in the week, the NJCAA football ranking committee released it's most recent Top 20 national poll. Central Lakes College, located in Brainerd, Minnesota, moved up two rungs to the #12 spot, on the merits of their 22-12 victory over North Dakota State College of Science, who was listed in the 'Receiving Votes' category at that time. The CLC Raiders moved to 2-0 on the season with the win and will begin the defense of their MCAC Eastern Division title at home on Saturday, September 16th. Central Lakes will host Vermilion Community College, who were 28-7 victors in Week 2 over M State. Joining Central Lakes College in the national top 20 this week was a familiar face to the Raiders; the College of DuPage Chapparals leveraged their 3-0 record so far in 2017 to a #17 slot in the poll. Central Lakes and DuPage faced off in the inaugural Red Grange Bowl this past December, with COD kicking an overtime field goal for the 25-22 win. The full Top 20 can be viewed by clicking this link.
