MCAC Football: Eastern Division Players-of-the-Week

The first weekend of Divisional play for football teams in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference gave fans, families and followers a chance to get a first look at how the playoff races may unfold.  The best of many outstanding performances around the MCAC have been tabbed as 'Players-of-the-Week' in the Eastern Division for the week ending Sunday, September 15.

Ny'Travious Barkley

                         Player-of-the-Week, Offense                                                                 

Mesabi Range running back Ny'Travious Barkley rushed for 113 yards, including a longest run of 30, in picking up this week's Player-of-the-Week on Offense in the MCAC Eastern Division. 

MRC battled back from a two-touchdown deficit to grind out a 29-27 Eastern Division win over Itasca Community CollegeBarkley was a big part of a ball-control offense that allowed the Norsemen to battle back in the contest, carrying the ball 26 times in the game. He averaged 4.3 yards a carry and accounted for more that a quarter of the the MRC 400 yards of total offense. 

Mesabi Range College, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Eastern Division, will travel to Duluth, Minnesota to take on Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College, also 3-0 on the year, on Saturday, September 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm.                                  

 

Collin Wilcox

Player-of-the-Week, Defense

The Central Lakes College defense was solid in a 48-21 Eastern Division win over Vermilion Community College on Saturday. 

Raider freshman linebacker Collin Wilcox (Elk River, MN) was a big part of that success, registering three solo tackles while assisting on three other.  Wilcox had 2.5 Sacks for a total of 16.5 yards, and four tackles-for-loss overall on the day, resulting in almost 20 negative Ironmen yardage. He also had a fumble recovery and a pass-breakup. 

Central Lakes College (1-2 overall / 1-0 Eastern Division) will take on Rochester Community & Technical College on Saturday, September 22.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm. 

Connor Cusick

MCAC Eastern Division 

Player-of-the-Week, Special Teams 

Connor Cusick picks up his second Special Teams Player-of-the-Week award of the fall, accounting for 12 of the 29 Mesabi Range points in a close, 29-27 win over Itasca Community College. 

Cusick hit three field goals in three attempts, with a longest kick of 31 yards.  He also went 3-for-3 on PAT's for the Norsemen.  Also handling the punting duties, Cusick had six kicks for 263 total yards, including a longest effort of 57 yards.  Four of his punts were downed behind the Viking 20 yard line. 

Mesabi Range and Cusick will face Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College, (3-0 overall / 1-0 Eastern Division) on Saturday, September 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm.           

                    

 

Notable Performances Around the Eastern Division                                                                                                                                                                  

On defense for the NorsemenSam Okuayinonu five tackles and two sacks, while Kean Thomas  had two interceptions. QB John Guerra was 15-of-32 for 204 yards passing. Ja'Vonta Holmes had three catches for the Mesabi receiving corps. Justin Hooks added a sack to the Mesabi defensive stat line on the day. 

Itasca's  D'Monta Harris had nine catches for 103 yards, with a longest grab of 27 yards.  Joshua Herbert had a pick-six with Amir Stewart also notching an interception. Emonte Wilson had 11 tackles and a sack. On special teams, punter Mitchell Miller had seven kicks for a total of 273 yards, with a longest boot of 50 yards. Jesse Sherwood led the Viking backfield with 11 carries for 65 yards. 

 

 Jake Franklin was 7-of-19 for two TD's and no interceptions on the day. Ridge Reed rushed for 105 yards on 21 carries, scoring twice for the Raiders.  Jordan Thompson had five catches for 110 yards. Defensively for Central Lakes, Braden Tyrrell had six stops, and John Gaughan had five CLC tackles. 

Haden Leach led Vermilin Community College with seven tackles, while Lipheteson Pierre had six stops for the Ironmen.  Offensively, Michael Innello and Glenn Smith combined for 176 passing yards, and Smith tacked on another 44 yards rushing. Ty Williams and Damon Dunn both had VCC touchdowns against CLC. 

 

 

RCTC kicker Juan Martinez was a perfect 2-for-2 on PAT's and connected on a 35 yard field goal for the Yellowjackets.   Running back Greg Henry carried 20 times for a 116 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively for Rochester, Jevonte Howard collected eight tackles, including five solo stops and a tackle-for-loss against the Thunder.
