MCAC Football Players-of-the-Week: Eastern Division

In a weekend which saw some teams begin to separate from the pack, several key performances lifted winning football teams across the Minnesota College Athletic Conference

The best of several great efforts have been tabbed as Players-of-the-Week in the MCAC Eastern Division of football for the week ending September, 22.

MCAC Eastern Division 

Player-of-the-Week, Defense

 

Eli Winegarner

 Fr. /  Deerwood, MN

Central Lakes College was able to even their season record at 2-2 overall and rose to 2-0 in the Eastern Division, thanks in large part to the efforts of Eli Winegarner, who is this week's Defensive Player-of-the-Week in the Eastern Division. 

The freshman linebacker from Deerwood, Minnesota collected 8 total tackles (4 solo) for the Raiders in their 33-27 win on Saturday. Included in Winegarner tackles were 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss overall, accounting for almost ten yards in lost field position for RCTC. 

Central Lakes will face off with Division-leading Mesabi Range College on Saturday, September 29.  The Raider-Norsemen showdown will kickoff at 4:30pm.

Player-of-the-Week, Offense

Joshua Booker

Joshua Booker scored three touchdowns for Itasca Community College in their 34-9 win over Vermilion Community College on Saturday. 

Booker - a freshman from Bradenton, Florida- scored two TD's on the ground as a part of his 11 carries on the day.  He also rumbled for a 70 touchdown catch for the Vikings. 

Booker and his Itasca teammates will line up against Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College on Saturday, September 29 in a key Eastern Division match-up.  Kickoff time is set for 1:30pm.

Special Teams Player-of-the-Week

Juan Martinez

Juan Martinez, a placekicker at Rochester Community & Technical College, has been tabbed Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for the Eastern Division of MCAC Football. 

Martinez and the Yellowjacket kicking unit was a perfect 3-for-3 on PAT's in a hard-fought 32-27 loss on Saturday at Central Lakes College.  He also booted five kickoffs for a total of 220 yards, averaging 44.0 yards a kick. 

Martinez and his RCTC teammates will take on Vermilion Community College at home on Saturday, September 29.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3pm in Rochester. 

  

 

Notable Performances in the Eastern Division:                                                                                                                       

 

Central Lakes College punter Zach Severtson kicked seven times for 262 yards, with a longest effort of 48 yards against RCTC.  Jake Franklin was 11-for-29 passing, with 136 yards and two scores. Ridge Reed went for 101 yards on 20 carries, scoring once and averaging 5.0 yards a touch. He also caught a pass for nine yards. Jordan Thompson led the Raider receiving corps with three catches and two touchdowns. Defensively, Collin Wilcox had 8 tackles while Daylon Puckett and Anthony King both had seven. 

 

Norseman Ny'Travious Barkley rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on Saturday; he carried 14 times total, averaging 4.5 yards a carry while teammate Kevin Shuler had 51 yards on 13 attempts.  Ja'Vonta Holmes had three catches for 46 yards and both Darryll Munoz and James Smith had interceptions in the 30-26 MRC win over FDLTCC.  Sam Okuayinonu collected five tackles, 3.5 of which were behind the line of scrimmage. 

 

 

Mitchell Miller threw for 317 yeards and a touchdown, with a 70-yard completion among his efforts on Saturday.  Jesse Sherwood ran for 71 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, while Michael Dunn caught four passes for an average of 12.3 yards a reception.  Joshua Herbert had an interception for the Vikings while Sam Moberg collected 8 tackles and a sack. 

Breon Jackson had 282 yards passing on 21 completions and one touchdown; he also ran 8 times for 60 yards.  Ty Williams rushed 12 times for 57 yards for the Ironmen.  Oscar Lopez and Glenn Smith both broke the 100-yard mark in receiving, with Lopez catching ten balls for 121 yards and Smith five passes for 112.  Lipheteson Pierre had three interceptions on the day, as well as four solo tackles.  Raevon Clarke and Sam Works each had six tackles. 

 

 

RCTC quarterback Michael Schimming had two TD passes among his 7 completions for 134 yards against Central Lakes.  Benjamin Thompson led all rushers in the contest with 107 total yards and two touchdowns. His longest run was a 69 yard effort. Wideout Trey Johnson caught two passes, both touchdowns, for the Yellowjackets. Trey Johnson had two kickoff returns for 66 total yards.   Jamel Smith had seven tackles for Rochester.
