Lake Superior College recently announced it's plans to expand athletics at their Duluth campus. One of the inaugural sports at LSC was the introduction of men's soccer last fall, representing one of the first sport seasons in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference for Lake Superior. Under the direction of Jeff Lightfoot, who earned Coach-of-the-Year honors for his squad's 2016 season performance, the 2017 Icehawks are looking to build on that first-year success. 

The MCAC office recently caught up with Lightfoot to learn more about his thoughts and plans for the 2017 season, which will be the second varsity campaign for the IceHawks.  

MCAC- Lake Superior is coming off of great year which included you earning the COY award.  How will the '16 season experience help your '17 squad?-  JL: "We return a number of players who were part of our 2016 season.  The experience of back to back games, road trips, the competitive level, the post season tournament, managing school work and soccer should have them much better prepared for 2017.  Their experience should also be a big help for our new players who will be experiencing this for the first time."

MCAC- Are there some returning student-athletes your team is looking towards to lead the way this year?- JL: "I have high expectations for all of the returners and will be leaning on them to mentor and guide our new players."

MCAC-  Any newcomers to the team you'd like to highlight?-  JL: "We have a nice mix of players joining us this season.  It is a diverse group from the U.S. and abroad that I believe will be a good fit for our style of play and our school."

MCAC-  What is the preferred playing style of your team- what do you hope fans will see on the pitch this year from the Ice Hawks?-   JL: "I expect us to be an attacking team that can pressure opponents offensively and be a strong determined side when we are defending.  If all goes well we should be an entertaining team to watch."

The encore season of Lake Superior College men's soccer, and the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, will kick-off in late August when Anoka-Ramsey takes on Augsburg College, Wednesday, August 23rd and Lake Superior College tangles with Dakota County Technical College on Thursday, August 24th.
