In what is normally a hot and humid weekend in the college soccer season, August 24-27 offered teams relatively cool temps and great playing conditions as the 2017 NJCAA college soccer season got underway.
The Anoka-Ramsey men's soccer squad traveled to Iowa Lakes Community College, and was looking to punch above it's weight as the Division III Golden Rams took on the NJCAA Division II Lakers on Saturday, August 26th. Unfortunately for the 10th ranked ARCC squad, they were unable to muster a sustained attack on the day, held to 7 shots and no goals in a season-opening shutout loss. The first half was Anoka's achilles heel, as they conceded three goals before the break, and were down 3-0 going into the halftime talk. The Golden Rams will look to rebound today, Monday, August 28th, when they host fellow MCAC squad, Lake Superior College at home in Coon Rapids. The match is scheduled for a 5pm start.
Also on the men's side, Lake Superior College opened up it's official season with a 3-1 loss at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount. In goal for the IceHawks, keepers Michael Petoletti and Misael Ortiz split the game, with them combining for 5 saves and 3 goals against on the day. The Dakota County Blue Knights, a NJCAA Division II squad, tallied all three goals in the first half.
The men's program at Riverland Community College, opened up 2017 with a pair of contests against four-year schools, beating Saint Mary's (MN) 3-1 in scrimmage action on August 23rd, and then traveling to St. Peter to take on the JV side of Gustavus Adolfus College. Riverland and Minnesota West are scheduled to play on Wednesday, August 30th in Worthington.
On the women's side, Anoka-Ramsey also took on Iowa Lakes CC and fell to the Lakers, 9-1. Anoka was able to put one on the scoreboard in the second half at the 74th minute, but an offensive onslaught in both periods by ILCC was too much for Anoka in their first contest of the season. Anoka will return to the confines of Coon Rapids, when they host MCAC rival Lake Superior College on Monday, August 28th.
The women's team at Lake Superior College fell to Dakota County Technical College, 4-2 on Thursday, August 24th. The Lake Superior women will travel with their men's team to take part in a MCAC double-header on Monday, August 28th, when the IceHawks take on the Golden Rams of Anoka Ramsey Community College. The women's game will kickoff at 3pm.
Rochester CTC women's side will open the season on Wednesday, September 6th when they take on Century College. RCTC also scrimmaged Saint Mary's (Mn) on Tuesday, August 27th.
