MCAC Women's Basketball: Athletes-of-the-Week

Divisional post-season spots are starting to take shape after some key results this past week in women's basketball around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference. Additionally, a campus record-setting performance was turned in by a Lake Superior Ice Hawk in an important MCAC Northern Division contest. 

Adidas, the United States Marine Corps and Nicklasson Athletic Company sponsor the MCAC Athlete-of-the-Week awards, and proudly honor the following student-athletes for their performances this past week on behalf of their teams.

Svetlana Stoen

The Performance:  Freshman standout Svetlana Stoen set a new school record while helping lead Lake Superior College women's basketball team to a 1-1 week with a dominating offensive performance. 

Stoen led LSC with a historic three-point shooting performance against Central Lakes College. The Duluth, Minnesota product hit 10 three pointers - a program best - en route to a 32 point game against the Raiders. Her ten triples were just two shy of the NJCAA single-game record.    

She also had four rebounds and two assists on the week. 

The Icehawks travel to Rainy River Community College on Wednesday, February 5th for a 5:30pm contest.

Melissa Brandt

The Performance: 

Minnesota West post Melissa Brandt averaged a double-double this week for the Lady Jays, tallying 27 points and 21 rebounds in two games over this past week.

The Lakefield, Minnesota product was 10-for-20  from the floor and hit 7-of-9 efforts from the charity stripe. She was equally adept on the boards, grabbing 21 rebounds while dishing out six Assists and grabbing one steal.

Minnesota West beat the JV team at Dakota State 71-64 and defeated SCTCC 73-62 in a MCAC Southern Division contest.  MnWest next plays on Wednesday, when they travel to Riverland Community College
