Cyclones storm to Regional Championship

Rochester, Mn--

The St. Cloud Technical and Community College women's fastpitch softball team captured the NJCAA Region XIIIA Championship on home soil Friday, and with it,  a berth into the NJCAA Division III National Championship tournament on May 18-20.

Second seed Anoka-Ramsey Community College battled back from a defeat to SCTCC on Thursday, by tripping up M-State Fergus Falls 3-2 in the 10am game Friday.   However, the Cyclones continued to be the dominant force in the Southern Division, whitewashing the Golden Rams in the championship game, 6-0.

Earlier in the tournament, #4 Minnesota West was eliminated on the heels of a 12-1 setback to SCTCC and a closely fought 8-7 loss to M-State.   The Lady Jays finished their season with a 6-14 MCAC mark and 6-20 overall record.

M-State and Anoka split their most recent regular season double header, but in the regional setting, ARCC was able to get the best of the Spartans with a 10-1 win on Thursday.

However, the momentum of that result was not enough to carry Anoka-Ramsey past St. Cloud Technical and Community College in the championship. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the league, Anoka concludes it's season at 29-14 overall, and a 15-5 MCAC record.  Minnesota State Fergus Falls wraps up it's 2017 campaign at 20-8 overall and 13-7 in the MCAC.

For head coach Greg Thorstad and the #3 nationally ranked SCTCC Cyclones, the 2017 season will continue in the quest for a national championship.  They will enjoy a relatively short trip in pursuit of the lofty goal, as Rochester, Minnesota will serve as the host for the 2017 NJCAA Division III National Championships.   St. Cloud Technical and Community College also appeared in the 2016 NJCAA National Championship Tournament.
