U.S. Marines MCAC Baseball Athletes of the Week: Week of March 14 - 20

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) has released its baseball athlete-of-the-week awards for the week of March 14 - 20.  The baseball athlete-of-the-week awards are sponsored by the U.S. Marines

Rainy River Community College sweeps the MCAC North Baseball awards this week.  Sophomore pitcher, Elyjah Wahlstrom, earns the MCAC North Pitcher-of-the-Week after striking out 10 batters over 6 innings of work in his two appearances last week while giving up only 2 earned runs. Voyageur teammate, John Michael Gonzalez Jr., hit .630 with 12 RBI and 2 homeruns, including a grand slam, to earn the MCAC North Player-of-the-Week.

Derek Heldman, Anoka-Ramsey Community College center fielder, is the week's MCAC Central Player-of-the-Week.  Heldman was 5 for 13 from the plate with two RBI and a stolen base.  His fully extended diving play helped preserve a tie game at the time against Rainy River Community College.   There were no nominations for MCAC Central Pitcher-of-the-Week.

Due to limited action, there were no nominations for the MCAC South Pitcher-of-the-Week or MCAC South Player-of-the-Week award.

Elyjah Wahlstrom

Penguilly, MN

 

 

Rainy River Community College sophomore pitcher, Elyjah Wahlstrom, appeared in two games during the week, striking out 10 and giving up only 3 runs on 7 hits in his six innings of action. The Penguilly, MN product did not give up a walk and finished the week with a 2.33 ERA, 1.40 ERA in his lone start. Wahlstrom is this week's MCAC North Pitcher-of-the-Week. 

The Voyageurs are 3-7 on the season and play again on Saturday against Western Technical College at UW -La Crosse.

 

John Michael Gonzalez, Jr.

Tucson, AZ

 

 

John Michael Gonzalez, Jr. is this week's MCAC North Player-of-the-Week. The sophomore center fielder for Rainy River Community College went 17 for 27 (.630) from the plate, with 2 doubles, a triple, and two homeruns including a grand slam.  The Tucson, AZ native drove in 12 runs, walked 5 times, and stole 2 bases in his 8 games.

The Voyageurs are 3-7 on the season and play again on Saturday against Western Technical College at UW -La Crosse.

Cole Schaefer (RHP/IF/OF, Mesabi Range College): 1-0 record pitching 7.0 innings, 5 strikeouts, 4 walks, 3 runs, and a 3.00 ERA.

Jack Dommeyer (RHP, Itasca Community College): 1-0 record pitching 4.1 innings, 7 strikeouts, 5 walks, 6 runs, and a 9.69 ERA.

Cade Marquardt (C/OF, Itasca Community College): 5 hits on 7 at bats, .714 avg., a double, 4 RBI, and 5 runs.

Dawson Tweet (IF/C/OF, Mesabi Range College): 7 hits on 11 at bats, .636 avg., 3 doubles, a triple, 1 RBI, and 13 putouts.

Derek Heldman

Blaine, MN

 

 

Anoka-Ramsey Community College center fielder, Derek Heldman, went 5 for 13 from the plate for a .385 batting average with a double, a triple, 2 RBI, and a stolen base.  The Blaine, MN freshman earns the MCAC Central Player-of-the-Week honor.  In the field, Heldman made a fully extended diving catch against Rainy River Community College to preserve a tied-game at the time.

The Golden Rams are 2-6, and next play again on April 2 in Austin, MN against Northland Community and Technical College.
