Athletes Honored with Post-Season Awards by MCAC Volleyball Coaches

Rochester, MN -

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) volleyball coaches have selected their 18-member North and South All-Division teams, coaches-of-the-year, and players-of-the-year for 2023. The top nine vote-getters from each division were also named to the All-MCAC Team, and the top six were named to the All-Region 13 Team.

In the North Division, Addy Gangl was named the MCAC North Player-of-the-Year. Gangl, a freshman middle blocker from Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range, leads the nation in kills per set with 5.88 and is ranked second in the nation in total kills with 529. She hit .309 on the season and served 45 aces as well. Gangle ranks 6th in the MCAC in total blocks with 77 and averaged 3.28 digs per set this season. Gangl helped her team win a share of the MCAC North Division title.

After each putting together successful seasons for their teams, Mitch McGuire (Alexandria Technical & Community College), Sara Matuszak (Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range), and Abdul Chamma (Northland Community & Technical College) were selected as this year's MCAC North Division Coaches-of-the-Year. McGuire has led the Legends to an 18-6 overall record, and his team won the Region 13B Tournament to advance as the #12 seed in the NJCAA DIII National Volleyball Tournament on November 9-11 in Cedar Rapids, IA. Matuszak led her Norse team to a 19-7 overall record and an appearance in the Region 13B Tournament. Under Chamma's tutelage, Northland went 13-11 on the season and advanced to the Region 13A Tournament.

Ella Hesse, freshman outside hitter for Minnesota West Community & Technical College, has been named the MCAC South Player-of-the-Year.  Hesse racked up 435 kills on the season, averaging 3.82 kills per set with a .264 hitting efficiency. Hesse tallied 430 digs this season, averaging 3.77 digs per set, and she served 23 aces. Hesse led her Lady Jays team to an NJCAA DIII Volleyball Top-15 ranking this season and to the 2023 NJCAA North Plains/Region 13A District finals. 

Minnesota West's Ella Hesse was named the MCAC South Player-of-the-Year.

 

Leading the Wood Ducks to another impressive season, Century College's head coach, Jay Kam was named the MCAC South Coach-of-the-Year.  Kam's team is currently 26-4 and won the Region 13A Tournament to advance to the NJCAA DIII National Volleyball Tournament on November 9-11 in Cedar Rapids, IA as the #3 seed.
