MCAC Baseball Players-of-the-Week

Rochester, Mn-

A handful of baseball teams in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference were able to get in some contests in a light week of action, following the conclusion of several spring trips.  A few teams had some student-athletes go above and beyond the call of duty for their squads this past week and those young men have been tabbed Players-of-the-Week for their respective teams as noted below: 

               NORTHERN DIVISION 

 Kevin Alicea

           Pitcher-of-the-Week          

                  

Kevin Alicea broke into the win column in grand fashion for Rainy River Community College this past week, on the merits of a 6-inning shutout, 2-1 victory against NJCAA Division II Dakota County Technical College

The sophomore from Winter Haven Florida, successfully scattered four hits while notching four strike-outs on the day.   Alicea helped his own cause from the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI.     

Rainy River is next scheduled to play next weekend, March 30 and 31,  in Worthington, Minnesota.             

 

 Joe Lescarbeau

   Player-of-the-Week 

 

Joe Lescarbeau of Hibbing Community College continues his hot hand at the plate for the Cardinals.  Against Dakota College-Bottineau, Lescarbeau collected five hits in nine at-bats over a pair of contests. 

He had four runs scored for HCC on the day, while knocking in four RBI's as well.    Hibbing dropped both contests to the Jacks, falling  12-10 in game one and 15-12 in the nightcap. 

Hibbing will next play on Friday, March 30 against Western Technical College at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. 

 

 

            SOUTHERN DIVISION 

    Jean Perez

    Pitcher-of-the-Week 

Minnesota West CTC pitcher Jean Perez pitched six solid innings for the Blue Jays in their most recent weekend contest on March 18 against Southwestern Community College. 

The freshman from Bayamon, Puerto Rico went 6.0 innings, giving up only six hits while striking out seven.  In the complete-game performance, Perez faced 26 batters, walking only two.

MnWest fell to SCC 1-0 in the pitchers dual.  The BlueJays are next scheduled to play on March 30-31. 

Brad Morris     

Player-of-the-Week

 

Riverland baseball student-athlete Brad Morris put together a strong outing at the plate in the Blue Devils most recent game on March 16 against Lake Region State College. 

The freshman outfielder collected a pair of hits in four plate appearances in the 11-1 RCC win.  Morris drove in three runs on the day to lead the offensive onslaught for Riverland. 

RCC is idle until Sunday, April 8, when they play Central Lakes College.

About baseball in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference:

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference boasts a strong tradition in America's pastime; over fifty years of collegiate competition has prepared student-athletes in the MCAC to pursue careers at four year college programs as well as professional ranks.

Currently the MCAC Baseball squads compete in a three-division set-up.  Northern Division teams include Hibbing Community College, Itasca Community College, Mesabi Range College, Rainy River Community College and Vermilion Community College.  The Central Division is home to St. Cloud Technical & Community College, Central Lakes College,  Ridgewater College, M State Fergus Falls and  Northland Community & Technical College.   In the Southern Division, Anoka-Ramsey CC, Minnesota West CTC, Riverland Community College, Rochester Community & Technical College and Western (WI) Technical College compete for a divisional title.

Beginning with the 2018 spring season, MCAC Division Champions and Divisional runner-up teams will advance to the 2018 NJCAA Division III Regional Tournament.  Additionally, a seventh playoff slot will be allocated to the highest ranked MCAC team as designated by the 2018 Region XIII which did not earn a championship or runner-up finish in divisional play.
