Braxton takes over Itasca Football

GRAND RAPIDS — Itasca Community College has hired Weldon Braxton as its new ICC head football coach.

Weldon has been the offensive coordinator for the Itasca football team since 2014.

ICC's offense elevated from being ranked 56th to 19th nationally over a two-year period. He has coached 14 MCAC All-Division offensive performers.

Braxton also serves as the director of residential living and student success coordinator at the college. He recently received one of the Legacy of Leadership awards from the Blandin Foundation. Weldon holds an master's degree in sports administration from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Arkansas Technical University in Russellville, Ark.

"We are very confident in Weldon's abilities to take on the leadership role with our football program. He understands that academics plays a huge part in team success. He will continue to rely on area student-athletes to be the heart of our program," stated Justin Lamppa, ICC men's athletic director. "With Weldon's up-tempo offense, the Vikings should be fun to watch in the years to come."

"I look forward to Weldon's leadership in helping our student athletes be successful both on and off the field," said ICC Provost Dr. Bart Johnson. "He has demonstrated his skills while serving as our assistant coach and also in the community."

Braxton will take over for Tom Inforzato, who stepped down earlier this month to become the head football coach at Mesabi Range College.
