MCAC Volleyball Week 2: Southern Division Players of the Week

Rochester, Mn-

With several teams playing in Labor Day tournaments over the past weekend, and a few squads electing to take some time off after a hectic preseason, the Minnesota College Athletic Conference has some familiar schools and some new faces, in it's Week 2, Volleyball Players of the Week release.

MCAC South Hitter-of-the-Week:

Cami Sletta, of Ridgewater College, turned in a strong performance against 4 different teams in a busy weekend for the Warriors.  Sletta registered 50 kills overall, while hitting .280 in tournament play.  She also had 16 service aces for Ridgewater.  The right sided hitter helped lead her team to a 7-2 overall record so far in 2017.  Ridgewater and M State will face off on Wednesday, September 6th in an important MCAC South fixture, in Fergus Falls.  The contest is scheduled for a 6:30pm start time.

MCAC South Setter-of-the-Week:

One familiar face in the MCAC South honors area is Sheyenne Gunderson, of M State.  As a setter, Sheyenne picked up where she left off in Week 1, this time dishing out 53 set assists against the JV of Mayville State, and another 31 against Concordia (Mn).  Gunderson had a two-match total of 84, to go with 14 digs and a pair of aces for the Spartans. For her efforts, Gunderson takes home her second consecutive Setter-of-the-Week honor in the 2017 campaign.

MCAC South Defensive Player-of-the-Week:

Jamie Goblirsch, of Ridgewater College, has earned the MCAC South Defensive Player-of-the-Week award, turning in a strong performance at the College of Dupage Invitational tournament in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.  Goblirsch had 96 digs total across five matches, and added 13 service aces as well.  The Warriors went 2-2 against some of the top programs in the midwest, beating College of DuPage and Rock Valley College, while dropping their first matches of 2017 to Madison College and Harper College, respectively.  Ridgewater and Goblirsch will face off against the M State Spartans this week in a key match for both teams.

MCAC South All-Around Player-of-the-Week:

In a close race for Week 2 All Around Player-of-the-Week, Kassandra Algarate of M State earns the nod for the honor. Algarate,  from Hancock Mn, patrolled the court as an outside hitter, registering 17 kills, 25 digs and 3 aces over two matches this past week.  The freshman has been a solid performer in the young season for coach Abby Crowser's Spartan squad, which is currently 4-3 overall and 1-0 in MCAC South play.  M State heads into the heart of Divisional action over the rest of September, with all remaining matches this month being against MCAC South foes.
