Lyga, Ihnen and Heggie Earn Player-of-the-Week Honors

Several super performances were on display in women's basketball around the Minnesota College Athletic Conference during the week ending on February 4. 

In a pair of key MCAC Northern Division contests,  Brooke Heggie (Northland CTC) patrolled the boards and put up strong offensive numbers for the Pioneers as they staked a claim to first-place in the Division and the Player-of-the-Week.  In MCAC Southern Division women's hoops, both Kerrigan Lyga (Western Technical College) and Katherin Ihnen (Minnesota West CTC) were instrumental in 2-0 weeks for their respective teams. The Cavalier and Lady Jay student-athletes were named co-Players-of-the-Week for the Southern Division.

Freshman Brooke Heggie stepped up this past week to help NCTC return to the top of the MCAC Northern Division standings and has earned Player-of-the-Week for her efforts.

Northland claimed an important 70-65 win over Rainy River (RRCC was previously  against 11-1 in NJCAA play this season) and a 71-61 victory over Central Lakes.  Heggie grabbed 14 rebounds, had 24 points and an impressive 6 blocks against CLC.  She also tallied three assists and two steals while playing as a center. 

Against Rainy River, Heggie went 9-of-14 from the field and had another big day on the boards, hauling in 13 rebounds. She had 23 points in the outing, claimed a steal and hit five free throws.   Northland moved to 6-1 and into a first-place tie with Rainy River in the MCAC North.

Kerrigan Lyga, a freshman forward for Western Technical College has earned Co-Player-of-the-Week honors for the week ending February 4.  Lyga,  from Cochrane-Fountain City, Wisconsin, is the first Cavalier to earn the POW honor during the 2017-18 women's basketball campaign. 

Lyga played an instrumental part in a 2-0 week in MCAC Southern Division play.  From the floor, Lyga averaged 20.5 points a game in a sweep of Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Riverland Community College.  She was also a force in the paint, collecting an average of 10 rebounds per game. 

Western Tech is currently tied for the fourth Regional playoff spot with Anoka-Ramsey as teams head into the final weeks of Conference play. 

 

                                                     

Katherin Ihnen

Katherin Ihnen, a sophomore center from Round Lake, Minnesota, has earned MCAC Southern Division women's basketball Co-Player-of-the-Week honors for the week ending February 4.

Inhen's play has been an integral part of the Lady Jay's current run of 11 straight wins and first place standing in the MCAC Southern Division.   In two victories this week, she shot 83% from the field, going 24-of-29 and was 14-19 from the charity stripe. Inhen was dominant in both Lady Jay victories, She averaging 31 points and 14 rebounds for the week.                                     

Minnesota West is unbeaten in the MCAC South at 8-0 and sit alone in first place.
